question re "unexpected quit"

Any help will be appreciated -  I got Halo for Mac and it worked fine at first - I am playing on a new iMac G5, OS X 10.4.2, 2.1 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon X600 XT graphics with 128 MB of VRAM. This computer was just purchased a week ago.  I had played the game for a bit through a couple of levels and it ran fine and then I started tweaking the video settings. When I go to re-launch it, it does an "unexpected quit" and defaults back to the desktop. I tried re-installing the app, I tried the 1.5.2 update from MacSoft, and still it quits. One of the MacSoft FAQs says that a problem very similar to this is solved by moving the "Shaders" folder from the game CD to the game folder on the Mac HD, but there is no "Shaders" folder on the game CD - only the application installer, a "ReadMe" and a folder with some older video drivers.

Another weird thing is, when I looked at the prefs file in users/[name]/library/preferences/Halo_preferences it showed the Halo preferences file with a Microsoft Entourage icon. I changed that to make it open with Halo but it still quits on me.  I've also tried to trash that particular file and see if a new one gets installed that will work, but it still quits even after installing a new prefs file......

I also tried changing the display settings on the Mac but nothing seems to work.....aaargh!

(The only thing I haven't been able to do is make sure that the OS is fully updated, because my phone is out of order and I have deadly slow dial-up anyway, a step beyond a tin can and a string.  But like I said I just bought this computer a week ago.....)

I'm stumped. Anyone got any ideas?  (short of re-installing the OS, that is.....)  Am I missing something really simple? Is this answered in an FAQ somewhere? I've done a fair amount of searching through various forums and can't seem to find anyone with the same problem.  Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Re: question re "unexpected quit"

Make sure you have up to date drivers for your video card. I know ATI has released some new ones a month or 3 back. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go and download ATI Displays from here. You can also use this application to override most of the video settings in Halo.
