The Death of Classic S@H
I received the following yesterday. For those of you who are using derilect email addresses,
SETI@home completes the switch to BOINC
----------------------------------------------------
SETI@home has completed its transition to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing). BOINC, developed at U.C. Berkeley, is a framework for volunteer computing projects like SETI@home.
Switching your computer to the new "SETI@home/BOINC" is easy. Visit http://setiathome.berkeley.edu for instructions. We'll be shutting down the "SETI@home Classic" project on December 15. The workunit totals of users and teams will be frozen at that point, and the final totals will be available on the web.
Say goodbye, folks. If you have machines crunching under OS 9, it's time to retire 'em - or at least switch to LinuxPPC.

Additional News:
I was alerted to this by... well... one of you.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_th … p?id=23902
There are G4/G5 optimized clients available, for those of you sad little mac users who SETI machines don't already have AMD Inside. (Kidding! I'm kidding!) Apparently, though I haven't tried them for obvious reasons (like this one) they speed up processing time significantly, and the reliability of the processed data (because remember, BOINC credits you based on the data that passes their verification, not just how many WUs you produce) is no worse than the stock client.
Get crunching!

Re: The Death of Classic S@H
I'm running an Altivec-optimized SETI client on my G4 400 from Team MacNN, and can attest to it's being quite a bit faster than the "stock" client. So far, anyway, I haven't had any results discarded. In case there are differences, I'm using the "javalizard" 7400 one from the bottom of the page.
Interestingly, the "recent average credit" for the G4 is approaching the number from my 800 MHz NT laptop (which is 2/3 allocated to sah):
Name Recent average credit
thor.local 45.56
Loki 48.53

They say that the most secure computer is the one not connected to the internet.
That's why security experts recommend Telstra BigPond.
