Re: What makes a sport.

Fishing is usually done sitting down. If you stand up, does it become a sport?

This "sitting down" criteria is bogus. Are these guys sitting down? Racing is a team sport. There are many tire changers who have lost a race when the driver had it won.

I say that hunting is not a sport because the animals don't have guns. There is no way to lose.

I say hunting is a sport, if you hunt the most dangerous game...

Re: What makes a sport.

Is rowing a sport?

Rowers are sitting down, but they have the elements of competition,  teamwork, and physical exertion.

Broadly speaking we seem to have:

1)  Athletic events where scores are measured as distance covered, (eg javelin, shot-putt) or times (running, swimming). These are usually solo events except for a few items such as relay races and rowing. Also some sports such as archery or shooting are points scores rather than time or distance scores.

2) Team sports such as baseball, cricket, football, volleyball, where the teams score goals, points or runs.

3) Olympic events such as  gymnastics, ice skating, or synchronised swimming where the winner is decided by points given by judges. (I agree with the general consensus that these are not really sports.)

This leaves out a stack of things which are competitive but not necessarily sporting:

Fishing, motor racing, rallying, yachting.

What is your definition of a sport?

It's hard to fly like a turkey when you're up to your ass in alligators.

Re: What makes a sport.

If you are competing against somebody or something else, and the distinct possibility of failure, I think that makes it a sport.

Competitive basket weaving? Possibly.

Yachting is definately a sport if it's racing.  Look at things like the Vende De Globe, and tell me that's not sporting.  Singlehandedly sailing a 60 foot sailboat from France, around the Southern Ocean and back is a hell of a thing.
