what to do with an ipod shell?
ok, my 2g 10GB ipod died... completely.. first the screen, then the battery, then the buttons (although the last problem was probably caused by me taking the entire thing apart to see how it worked).. anyway, the hd had been a little flaky for a few months, and the firewire port kept messing up, and the computer couldnt see it at all...
so i have an ipod shell (the front and the back)... but i cant figure out what to do with them...
i'm probably going to get a new ipod once the 60 GB comes down in price, sop i don't want to build a frankenpod...
i was thinking of using it as an interesting box for some sort of project, but there has to be something better... perhaps a remote for my computer or something...(i already have a keyspan one)
anyway... does anyone else have an idea?
and can i use that flaky hard drive for anything else, or is it made to only work in the ipod (could i turn it into a portable drive sans ipod?)

Re: what to do with an ipod shell?
i dunno if this would fit or not but oyu could try hacking apart a gameboy advance sp and sitkcing the screen in the ipod screen spot. making spaces for the buttons would be even trickier, wouldlook really cool though iGameBoy.

Somehow re-casing a small cellphone with voice-dialing would be incredibly badass.

That would be insanely great, and could likely be done, if you use a headset with it.
All posts on the internet are postfixed by an invisible "IMHO". It's not in the html code, either.

Re: what to do with an ipod shell?
-re-engineer a push button butane lighter under the firewire opening
-make it a five button mouse with scroll wheel
-super glue it to the ground in a public area and laugh at people who try to score a free ipod
i'm having quite a bit of fun with this... Freezer, if you decide not to bother, send it my way!

I concur.

pics of ipod internals.
pictures take a while to load.. high res takes really long..
high res pics are 6x images taken with scanner.(images 6 times larger than real life)
the wheel was coated in glue and plastic. i stripped the plastic off to expose the circuit board underneath.

Re: what to do with an ipod shell?
look for the altoids MP3 player plans, use the ipod case.
its a standard IDE drvie with 3.3? volts hookup, so look around for an adapter of sorts, I use granite digital bridges, this weibetech one looks like a winner, just find pinout of the ipod hard drive and compare to a CF card
