Re: Dual Monitors on an iBook!? (or a G4...)
Okay, I understand the whole, having to download the hack for dual display on the Ibook G4s, but where do you go about plugging the second monitor into the ibook? Can you get monitors in USB or do you have to get an adapter?

I'm not sure if it holds true for iBooks, but my powerbook came with a mini-vga out adapter to vga, and also one with s-video out and yellow component out. So maybe iBooks come with them too? I'm not sure. If not, you can definitely buy them.

There's a mini VGA plug on your iBook and unles you bought it used (and even then) there should be an adapter for it. If not, you can get it from the Apple Store (which also sells DVI adapters for the iBook if I remember right)

People have said several times that using the hack "may void your warrantee." Can someone clarify? If I use this hack can I delete it if I need to use the warrantee, and no one at apple will be the wiser?

Just reset your PRAM & NVRAM, and teh hack is wiped out until you re-apply it.

Heres your dual monitor hack for the ibook right here http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html i don't know about the powermac
I just recently ran into this hack. Besides possibly voiding the warranty, what are the downsides to using it. If it's not a big deal then why is it not an option within the prefs?
I have twice sent my iBook in for MAJOR work without removing the hack....nothing was noticed either time...having said that i live in Thailand where anything goes.
It's not an option because Apple are a very moneygrabbing company, and I believe they have disabled the external monitor so you'll buy a powerbook. Rute's hack is I think merely a "switch back on" (it's very short code) for a capability that has been purposely and meanly disabled by Apple.
If i am wrong i apologise...and then i hope Apple will apologize for using poor quality low voltage wire on the iBook charger. There has been a lot of trouble with this fraying and for me it shorted. Apple is well aware of this i know because there are numerous complaints on a thread on their own site.....and yet last week a friend bought an iBook and after many years they are still using the same rubbish that caused me the problem. Why? Well here in Thailand a replacement charger costs about $100....or is it just laziness?

How exactly do you reset the PRAM and NVRAM. I love this hack, but I'm scared about the warranty issues. Besides that thanks for the hack it's fantastic!

I wouldnt really worry about it.
And strictly speaking its not really a hack, as a matter of fact you could call it a repair because the Video card that comes in iBooks supports dual screens natively and Apple cripples them so they won't.
So all you are doing is restoring your video card to its original condition.

I probably wouldn’t if I could-‘Cause I’m mad as hell-Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

For the desktop, you need it to have a TwinView nVidia card or newer ATi Card. Older desktops have 2 plugs (1 ADC or DVI, 1 VGA) but you can only use one at a time. Unless it's a TwinView.
You can also add a PCI video card to a Mac Tower for a 2nd monitor. Just make sure it is a Mac compatible card and compatible with the OS you are running.
