Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
So I am going to upggrade my 733 G4 (Digital Audio) processor. Does anyone know the comparison for the Dual 1.8 G4 vs the Dual 1.8 G5?
I have used the above G5 and I remember thinking "This is niiiiice". It makes the video rendering fly. What kind of performace will the 7447 chip provide?

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
It'll be a big difference, but the bus is what's holding the G4 back. I like the G4 but why has its potential been thrown away? I think it's a better chip for mobile applications than the Intel (all the "benefits" from the Core Duo in a notebook have been dispelled at this point other than sheer horsepower) and I think the next notebook I buy will be a refurb 15'' PBG4. If only they'd sped up the bus speed...

Quicksilver upgraded vs G5 at Barefeats
velly interesting test.
I know you stated a DA, but this is the closest I could find. took a bit, but knew I read it there somewhere.

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
cool.
I knew I had heard that the chips were pretty impressive at those speeds but I hadn't seen any comparisons.
And at only 600 bucks, it looks like a good buy.

They'd have to redesign the chip - if they were going to expend the effort, they would have done it years ago.
The 167 Mhz bus speed of the G4s isn't all that slow compared to the 133-266 MHz bus speeds of the competition. However, Intel and AMD chips are either double or quad-pumped (using similar technology to DDR ram) to give much higher effective bus speeds (533 Mhz for the Core Duo, all the way to around 1 GHz for the tope tier Athlons and Pentium 4s)
I'm no electrical engineer, but my extremely limited knowledge of same tells me that it would be... difficult... to
"adapt" a chip design to use a DDR FSB. They work very differently on a very low, very geeky level.

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
Wow, those Barefeats tests are impressive.
I believe Freescale had been working on a dualcore G4 w/ 200Mhz FSB and that was as far as the G4 design was taken and they weren't fabbed in quantity.
I'd go for that as well. For PS and FCP it looks quite nice for the money. As long as you already have 1GB+ RAM and some nice 10k rpm + HD's.
Looks quite nice, now remember if you want to run Motion or some such the extra bandwidth of the FSB will help the GPU a lot. Not to mention it will definitely be CI compatible.

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
I don't have 10k drives (I have 7200k drives).
I remember when I bought this machine how "fast" it was. Now, not so much.
So, I have the RAM, I like the drives (I might upgrade to SATA at the same time). I have a good 128mb graphics card (The ATI one that will power my Cinema Display). Oh, but that card doesn't meet the Motion reqs.
Oh well, I guess I need a new one of those.

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
Okay... some more "revelations":
In order to make my DA "Motion Ready" (and yes, I really like... umm, want, Motion), I would need" to do the following:
$260 ATI 9800
$89 DVI to ADC Connector
$180 to double my ram from 768 to 1.5
$200 for two 250 gig SATA Drives
$55 for a PCI SATA controller
$600 for a Sonnet Dual 1.8 G4 processor
Total: $1384
..... Or I could sell my 733 G4 and my 22" ADC LCD for about $800 and buy an Intel iMac for an additional $900 and still have almost $500 to add more ram and a bigger drive.
Since I do plan on upgrading to Final Cut Studio by the end of the year, I am figuring that I might come out ahead with the iMac. Of course, I could do nothing at all until the Intel towers are introduced. I am sure that i will need to do "something" with my ADC since it doesn't look like the new video cards are supporting it.
Decisions, decisions....

You should definitely wait untill the Intel towers are introduced.

Wait for the towers, and in the meantime you can save up money, so it will help you out all around.

So... just to be sure: You all think I should wait.
Yeah. Me too. And that makes me a fifth.

fifth of what?
if you can't buy it all at once or your credit is poor, you saw that you can still upgrade to a pretty decent machine a bit at a time.
but I am with the others.... upgrade at the wall socket.

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
Yeah, I've had this machine for 5 years. At first glance, I thought I could come out ahead by doing a little "bit". But even I realize that sometimes you gotta "let go".
I'm already sending in my ADC for trade. In size I'm going down (20") but my resolution will increase. I was thinking of getting a non-Apple monitor but they have served me well these past :does math: 15 years.

Re: Processor Upgrade Question G4 vs G5
for all the flack they seem to get, I have been most happy with all the displays, both ADC, current and the older colorsyncs they name branded in the last twenty + years.
that being said, I currently run one medical grade black&white planar 20" which is great, plus a 20" apple al display.
and I still want one of the 30's
but there are some great displays out there without the Apple name on them.
Macworld has a couple good reviews.. sorry i am too lazy to get you the links tho.
after you get new.. it would be good to keep your DA in your lan if possibletho.. ya never know when it will come in handy.

Yeah, I have a hard time letting go anyway. And for those impromptu StarCraft parties another computer never hurts.... Oh sorry, this isn't the Games forum
Anyway, I like the 20" Apple LCD, so I am sure I am getting that one.
(And I still have a 14" Colorsync... somewhere)
