Windows Games, where to get reviews and lists of recent releases?

Now that I have a gaming capable PC, I suddenly find myself looking at all the different PC games down the "games" ailes of electronics stores I go into.  There are many more for windows that for mac, it would appear.  When I occaisonally ran a 2 or three 3 year old game on my iBook it was easy to find fun games at places like macgamefiles or on the Apple Downloads page.

Could somebody point me in the direction of a website where I can find accurate reviews and information about PC games and lists of recent ones and such.

One game I've always wanted to try out is "Star Wars republic commando".  Sure it's another cliched star wars game but it's graphics don't look half bad, and it's squad based, which is more than any other Star Wars game can boast.  Aside from that, Halo and Doom III are the only games I know much about. confused

Go to a store like Gamestop that sells used games.

Buy all of them.

Reading Control Alt Delete or Penny Arcade is enough to keep you aware of what's coming next. Similar to the way that reading political cartoons are an effective means of keeping informed, in a loose, general sense.

As far as catching up on all the games you missed, you'll probably want to browse the user reviews at Epinions.com, or a similar site. You should be able to browse to the games listing, then sort by rating.

Personally, I'd start with X-Com 2, X-Wing: Tie Fighter and Mechwarrior 3 and go from there, chronologically. Rome: Total War is, imo, the best RTS game ever. Dawn of War is good too. Halo, despite being aged, is still loads of fun. But honestly, most of the really great games came out for Mac OS, so you probably know about them already.

Mechwarrior, though - that's one you gotta play.

List of games you should give a try:
Mechwarrior 4
Halo
UT2004
Homeworld 2
FEAR
Call of Duty 2
Dawn of War
Rome: Total War (and the upcoming Medieval 2: Total War)
Starcraft (NEVER FORGET WHERE YOU CAME FROM nod)

All are cruise control for quality games.

Hmmm... personally, I liked Homeworld 1 better than Homeworld 2. Graphcis weren't as good, but it was more fun.

No Half Life 2 confused wink

Games are hard to recommend because everyone has different tastes. I'm a shooter/RPG guy and have a hard time getting into RTS/Sports/Racing games.

Gamestop, GameInformer, and MaximumPC online all have good info on games.

IMHO I'd suggest in order:
Half Life 2 (best shooter out there...FEAR maybe close but I haven't played so I don't know the story line. From what I've read the story is a bit weak)

Unreal Tournament 2004 (Great game, lots of freebie content to keep it fresh and with '07 due out '04 has had some good price cuts to clear the shelves.)

Doom 3 and/or Quake 4 (DIII is much more intense with its cheap thrills than Q4. Both have a good story line.)

All of these you can jump online and play humans if things get a bit boring.

If someone came up to me and said "I just spent most of my cash on a good game rig and can only afford one game what should I get?" I'd reply with UT2004 because it has a great balance with online/offline gaming and has tons of free community created content.

Re: Windows Games, where to get reviews and lists of recent releases?

Personally, I'm a shooter fan.  I get insanely bored with racing games, and I just don't have the dedication or attention span to play really long RTS simulations, like Civilisation and such.  Occaisonally I'll play a really long round of Star Wars battlegrounds or something, but doing that often kinda takes out the pleasure.

After reading a bunch of gamespot reviews, I know which games NOT to buy, at least. (Attack of the Zombies, Starship Troopers, etc...)

Once I was finished reading the Doom III review I kinda said to myself... "Well I'm glad I didn't buy that!".  The article made the game seem like just another linear shooter, with no real thrill because you already know that there's a zombie with a chainsaw just around the next darkened corner, or that any second now an imp is gonna spawn behind you and try to rip your head off.  As much as I like its brilliant graphics, I think Quake 4 sounds better, due to it's squad type play.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not a tom clancy fanboy, all the raibow six/splinter cell/ghost recon are the same silly "Kill the drug lord/terrorists/other enemies of liberty, god and fast food...  There is only one game of that type I ever had fun playing and that was Global Operations, though I'm not sure which, as I think there are two of them.

Yeah... anyway thanks for the references.

My fav shooter games

2- UT2K4 lotsa free add ons (as mentioned by LLevi)

3- F.E.A.R For the visuals (story line is weak) maps are pretty simillar but the developer kit was released not long ago, should be getting new maps soon.

4- Wolfenstein Enemy Territory   Old, yes, buit still fun. It's free !! cool

All these I play online. I love shooting at real peeps. Although I'm usually the one getting shot at  cry

It's not that great (squad AI that is) and you do spend most of the game alone with your squad waiting on you to hurry the smurf up and open the door, turn on the power, get the blah blah blah...
