Buying a new computer
Since 1994 I've been using an lc575 as my main computer, it checks email, but surfs the internet slow as all hell. Nobody cares, since I don't use the internet for anything except this. Whenever I go to any site that is big, the browser tends to blow up, and I have to restart. I'm thinking about buying a new mac, so.......what the hell should I get????????????

Re: Buying a new computer
If you have a monitor and keyboard that you already like, get a Mac mini.
If you want new everything, an iMac is perfect.

Re: Buying a new computer
If this is the computer you've been using all these years, the keyboard and mouse were Apple ADB - you'd have to find a converter for Apple ADB to USB, if it exists. Then you could use that set, but generic USB keyboards and mice are very cheap and work albeit with some modification of function keys.

Are you clinically insane?
Surely I can get a capable computer and not have to pay that much...
$600+ for a mac mini, and $1300+ for an imac? Give me a break, surely in this day and age people aren't still shelling out that kind of money just for a basic home computer... geesh...

Re: Buying a new computer
That LC575 cost you about $1700 nback in 1994. Did you get your money's worth? Any reason to believe you won't get that from an iMac or a Mac mini?
It would become you to be a bit more courteous to people who are trying to give you helpful advice. Oh, wait. Did I say "a bit"? I meant "a lot".

Ask and you shall receive.
Would you like anything else with that attitude of yours?
BTW, millions of people per year buy these machines for "basic computing needs." We're talking kids under the age of 14.

Re: Buying a new computer
IIRC, the LC575 had a built in monitor. As mentioned, the keyboard and mouse are ADB and won't work with any Mac system built in the last 7 years. I recommend getting an iMac, since you get some pretty good bang for your buck, mainly since it comes with a good quality LCD monitor. If the LC could last you 12 years, I'm sure that the iMac would be able to last you at least that long. As for price, that's what computers cost. Especially for good quality ones. You could get a PC for around $400 (sans monitor), but the components are crap and aren't very likely to last you too long. You get what you pay for. Beside, Macs come with some really good software (such as iLife), so you may end up finding yourself doing things on your computer you didn't think you would, or even could.
Edit: BTW, it's a good thing that you don't visit many sites, because that old of a computer just won't cut it. With today's flash-bloated sites, it would quickly overload your computer, or just make it so it's plain unviewable. Modern browsers that support the newest web technology is pretty short for that old of a system, I'm sure... (IIRC, Mac OS 8.1 is the newest you could run on that system, since it still uses the '040 processor. It may even have a floating point unit on it!

Re: Buying a new computer
No built in monitor. Small pizza box:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/m … c_475.html
It was also $1,085 US when it was new. That did not include a monitor.
iMac w/built in monitor is $1,299. Not bad if you ask me.

Re: Buying a new computer
Get the mini. Then pick-up a 17" LCD w/DVI for around $200. Get a Mac keyboard and the USB mouse you prefer and a set of speakers (or if you don't care about sound, many LCDs have integrated stereo speakers).
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

I am geniunly curious about that. So you're saying there's not a pc motherboard maker on gods green earth that cannot not produce a motherboard that isn't crap and won't just suddenly stop functioning a few months down the road? oooookkkkkkkaaaaaayyyyyyy........

Read it carefully, then read Interactive_Eaten's post. He is using a 575, you linked the 475. I used to have a 475 (it was my first computer), but the school I went to at the time had 575s, which had a built in monitor.
Edit: here's the info about the LC 575. (http://www.lowendmac.com/500/lc575.shtml) The highest OS that it supports is indeed OS 8.1, and it turns out that it doesn't have an FPU. (uses the LC040 instead of the standard '040 processor, which means the crippled it by removing the FPU) I remember when I had the LC 475 there were some things I couldn't do just because of that missing FPU...
Interactive_Eaten: If you'd read my post, you'll realize I'm not saying that all PC motherboards will simply stop working. I'm saying that the motherboards and components that you get with a $400 PC are generally crap. They come with the bare minimum, probably not enough to even make Windows run very happily, and are not of very good quality. As usual, lets look at a car analogy. American cars are generally cheaper than Japanese cars. However, their reliability is not nearly as high. Computers are the same, and there's even more that can go wrong with a computer system. If you buy cheap components, they aren't going to be as reliable. It's simple. Of course, if you get a more expensive PC with better quality parts, that will change, and the reliability goes up. Apple usually buys rather good quality parts.

The car analogies are only needed when somebody doesn't understand what's being told to them. Either way, this thread is going downhill fast.
