Re: Happy Birthday OS X
It took my awhile to make the switch...
I switched my DV iMac to OS X just before Jaguar came out, then 6 months later, I got Jaguar pre-installed on my iBook. I got Panther about 4 to 5 months after it came out (it also shipped with my Power Mac G4 I got later that year). And I got Tiger the day after it came out.
I no longer have OS X installed on my DV iMac. I don't use it much anymore, so it has it's original 9.0.4 on there now. I don't mind the old Mac OS. In my opinion it's easier to use, but it's just not supported enough anymore to make it useful. For basic internet surfing and word processing, OS 9 will do it fine in today's world, but like I said, it's just not supported well enough to my standards.
I doesn't seem like it's been 5 years though. I guess because it hasn't been for me. It's only been a little over 3.5 years since I upgraded to 10.1.
In the five years, my personal favorite feature would have to be Exposé. It's definitely the most quick and useful tool for finding hidden windows. And as far as I'm concerned, it's better than that 3D flip feature Vista is supposed to have which to me sounds more like eye candy than a useful tool. But, we won't know until we see it in person.
Also, don't forget that Apple's 30th birthday is coming up here in about a week, so that will be another major milestone.

Ahhh, DP4...

Re: Happy Birthday OS X
I'm surprised no one said PhotoBooth was their favorite feature.

The rest of my family switched at 10.0, but I held out till 10.3.8, which is when I discovered Blizzard had a Native Installer for OSX for Diablo II: LoD.
I couldn't go back to OS 9.

I have Tiger, but I don't have an iMac or MacBook Pro w/a built-in iSight.
This page spells it out though:

Actually, there's a space between Photo and Booth. Like "Photo Booth" (while we're all being just slightly overly picky, in a kiddingly, annoying kind of way).

In 5 years time, the Finder will still be a single-threaded piece of smurf.
Probably.

The Finder is multi-threaded.

Re: Happy Birthday OS X
I was referring to the fact that a lost network connection can still lock up the user interface. Sorry, you're probably right – it is multithreaded. But it isn't intelligently so such that a lost network connection won't cause a bottleneck and stop UI response. This particular example is all the more disturbing since most of the actual network and filesystem activity will be handled by entirely different processes.
