Icon probs

Well I first posted this in the OSX trouble shooting forum but so far no responses. I'm putting it here since I know it will be seen more and maybe generate some responses.

Using 10.2.2. Suddenly within the last two days I'm seeing the wrong icon attached to files and folders. Specifically some Photoshop jpgs and my Applications folder alias in my FruitMenu folder

Re: Icon probs

Delete the System folder, Delete your Users folder, umm oh wait, nevermind

The problem I think is an icompatibility with APE (Application Enhancer). Try disabling this first and restart. See if that changes anything.

If it doesn't then there is something messed up with the Finder. I dunno if the Finder has some sort of database, like in OS 9 (Desktop DB remember?).

What I would do is put the preferences that have something to do with the finder on another folder (you can place it on the trash but what if that didn't fix the problem, you can always put them back where they were).

Check both the Library/preferences/ folder in you home Directory and in the root directory.

If that doesn't work, well I don't know. Call 911?

Re: Icon probs

Rebuilding the desktop file used to fix many icon problems in OS 9.
Haven't done it in X, yet, if it even still works.

Re: Icon probs

Thanks for the input. I honestly don't how OSX gets the proper icons for an app and its files but I believe it has to do with lists associated with each app. What is happening is that the mini-preview icons on Photoshop files are being switched around

Re: Icon probs

it sounds like your cache is corrupt.... trash the cache called "com.apple.FCacheLocalDomain" in the '"your hard drive name here"/library/caches/' folder....also might want to trash this one "com.apple.IntlDataCache.(your user number here)"
it happens occasionally in jaguar... i think theres even a utility in version tracker called "cache cleaner" or something like that....

Re: Icon probs

When was the last time you fsck'ed it all and updated your prebindings?

::The MMSpeak-->English Translation Service, how may I help you today?::

Have you run the disk utility (in single user mode (Command-S on bootup) and typed fsck -y) and done a sudo update_prebindings lately?

Re: Icon probs

I did trash the "com.apple.FCacheLocalDomain" file and it seems to have fixed things for the present. I haven't fsck'ed or updated the prebindings in a while (amazing how easy it is to forget about OSX's UNIX guts). I'll tinker a bit when I get back to my main G4.
