Chess Software for Macintosh.

MacAddict and other publications are light on Chess Software for Macintosh.
Some of the products available:
Chess Master 9000  by IBI is OS X friendly.
The problem with CM 9000 as well as with the Windows versions is that the software requires the DVD remain in the Bay.

SigmaChess6.3/HIARCS10.6 :
Probably the strongest program(s) available for Macintosh.
The 2 products work together.  You can switch engines.
The licensed product for Sigma allows unlimited PGN downloads.
You can even play Fischer Chess with the program.
HIARCS 10 has a free version.  But the Licensed version is awesome.
SigmaChess.com - The product cost $15 for a license key.
HIARCS 10: $35 approximately.  (An English program).

Note: The older versions of HIARCS below 9.6 will not work with OS 9 or OS 10.  The older version is still sold online by Chess online stores.  Avoid it.
The older version is usually sold with another Macintosh Chess product which contains every chess game ever played.  An old Chess Base Product?

Shredder Chess:  The strongest software available for Macintosh.
The Macintosh product came in 1st Place in many software tournaments.
I believe the product is rated 2900 which is in the high GM level.
Hiarcs is probably in 2700+ level.  Sigma has adjustable levels.
If you are learning the game, set the mode to low level.

With Sigma Chess there are Opening Books, Endgame books, Middle Game Books available.  They are called Libraries.  You can make your own libraries.

Avoid the Uni. of Pittsburg downloads since they are suspect.

Note: That Yahoo!.com/groups has a Macintosh chess User group.
There are articles on Macintosh Chess written by developers in the Website.
Other chess for Macintosh: Go to Sigmachess.com and the site list other
programs.  Sigma however is the best.

Window Products: To run Window chess books, such as Lasker, Alekhin,
Steinitz. (You can buy them from Amazon.com at a low price) you need
MS Virtual Windows.  I tested the product and it works fine for the purpose.
I was able to read Steinitz's works.  Chessbase, and the ECO people,
Encyclopedia of Chess Openings site, list a forum on how to run their products on a Macintosh.
Both ChessBase, and ECO indicated to me, they have no intention of manufacturing products for Macintosh.  They claim they would have to hire
a special programmer.
Learning Programs: Sigma Chess has to be the best.
CM 9000 does provide lessons also.
But CM has limitations.
One more program: KASPAROV Chess is also available.
It is strictly a chess playing program.  You set the level of the type of game you want.  You can not set up positions.  According to the manufacturer you can not enter PGN games.

Re: Chess Software for Macintosh.

"Chess Master 9000  by IBI is OS X friendly."

Chessmaster 9000 was published by Feral Interactive on the Mac (The PC original was published by UbiSoft). The Mac version has a fully redesigned Aqua interface to replace the original Window 3.11 interface look.

"The problem with CM 9000 as well as with the Windows versions is that the software requires the DVD remain in the Bay."

You need to have the disk in the drive when you start the game after that you can eject the disk if you wish.

"CM 9000 does provide lessons also But CM has limitations."

If you would like to send us an email about these "limitations" we can take them into account when evaluating other Chess titles and future patches. You can contact us by email you can get the address from the chessmaster built in support system in the opening options panel or from the documentation that comes with the game. If you don't own the game you can find the contact details on the support page which can be found in my sig.

The Chessmaster 9000 game is powered by "The King" engine which is rated at 2804. The game engine scales very well from very low ratings of 20 all the way to it's maximum of 2804. Chessmaster 9000 has played against the highest ranked US player at the time (Larry Christiansen) and won the match.  The game has opening and closing books along with a database of over 500,000 games, you can import more into the game by using the standard PGN format chess files found on the web. You can also setup positions and get positions analysed by the Chessmaster engine.

You can think of Chessmaster 9000 as a mixture of a Chess game, all of the fancy interface and graphics and a Chess Program with all of the analysis tools and databases.

If you have any questions on Chessmaster 9000 features feel free to send us an email (or PM me) and I will get back to you with more info.

Hope the extra info helps,

Cheers,

Edwin

Re: Chess Software for Macintosh.

New in Macintosh Chess:
For those switching to the Window/Macs:
Shredder for Macintosh has a free download for those using the Window/Mac
users.
Comments:
I have been using Macintosh Chess programs since Sargon I and CM I.
Chess Master I came on one floppy disk, and was hand written.
CM 1 had limitations.  While adding Tal-Botvinnik 1961 WC Match games the program crashed.  The programmer told me there was a limit of 89 moves per games.  Later upgrades fixed the problem.
CM 4 was very weak.  It could be beaten over and over in 4 moves.
CM 9000.  The problem with CM 9000 and all CM versions is that you can not add notes to the games.
For chess players studying the game, Sigma Chess/HIARCS 9.6 or 10 is the way to go.   SigmaChess allows personal notes, or imported notes.  (For notes go to
Chessville.com, and then downloads).
To really have fun, try Shredder.  I must assume Shredder is the most powerful
program out there.  It must be over 2900+, which is equal to or above GM points.
HIARCS which is a very good program is probably in the 2800+ category.
I use SIGMACHESS/HIARCS, both licensed programs for study.
In a test I ran Alexi Troitzky puzzles to see if SIGMACHESS/HIARCS could solve the puzzles.  I ran over 100 puzzles.  SIGMACHESS/HIARCS solved most of the puzzles.
Available for casual chess users is JOSE CHESS, Exacta Chess, and others.
Go to SigmaChess.com for a listing.
With proper study using Sigma/HIARCS 10 your rating should go up.
A final note:  The main problem with Chess programs, table sets, and portables was the endgame.
SigmaChess/HIARCS has an endgame book (files) which you can run.

At chess.app? I worked out I can win on about 1/5 of the slider. I still can't beat my mother though.

Re: Chess Software for Macintosh.

I dropped out of chess when everybody switched to algebraic notation. That just doesn't work for me.

I have to have my P-K4! Does any chess programs support standard notation?

Re: Chess Software for Macintosh.

In reply to above:
Standard Notation.  I assume you refer to "English Notation".
There is not any. But...........
There is another way without entering any notation.  CM9, Shredder, SigmaChess, and others enter moves for you as you move the pieces.
I never thought that the English notation would die out.  I wrote an article around 1975 for a Chess publication on the change to Algebraic, and U.S. players complained.  Alegebraic and piece notation are here to stay.  The English Notation is just about finished.  Except for some old chess books by Reinfeld,
Fine, and the Batsford Editions.
Item 2:  Improving Chess:  You have a computer.  Download SigmaChess/Hiarcs.  The free version play at around a 1775+ rating.   Enter your games into a Sigma Chess database.  (Create a new file with your games).  Run the Analysis feature.  Either the Sigma Chess or Hiarcs will evaluate your moves.  You should improve.  There is a 1960ish Chess book which I recommend.  Think Like a Grandmaster.  Especially read the chapter on Candidate Move selection.
That should get you started.

My problem:  Because of the administrator or security feature, I am unable to run the UCI feature of HIARCS 10.  HIARCS people are unable to figure it out.
Neither am I.  I ran the Terminal codes and the computer indicated no such program exists or the program is not licensed.  (Although it is).  If anyone has
any suggestions please let me know.  Note:  When HIARCS went from 9.6 to 10 the programmer for HIARCS sent me a new code which did work.  The program failed when my computer went to the Rastor Effect.  I changed computers.
Even with the back up, HIARCS would not recognize the registeration code.
I am the only user for my computer.  i believe the problem may be non-recognition of the code due to the user's permissions, although I am not sure.

Re: Chess Software for Macintosh.

Star Wars pieces:
Sigma Chess, possibly some of the others allow you to enter your own pieces.
Some how you can design your own Chess pieces.
However no chess program currently has Star War pieces, because that would involve a license from the Company.
There are table (NON-electronic) Star War sets available.
Probably on ebay.
