Hee. 16 stores (including minis) in a 60-mile driving radius, with the nearest one 7 miles away.

I can top that. There are numerous stores in this area, not to mention countless numbers of stores in a 60 mile radius. I also have the Apple Company Store 15 minutes from here, and there's only one of those.

whenever I goto the MoA store, it's always packed. I hate/love it. My family spends 4 hours at the mall, and I spend the whole time at the Apple store.

I'm sure that Apple has lots of people whose job it is to decide where and when a retail store will be profitable. It's either a permit or location issue or a store where you want it isn't worthwhile. I'm sure Steve Jobs could care less where the stores go. Not his job. Say what you will, but I've always had just the eensiest crush on the guy.
I'm sure you would change your mind (like I did) with some stories that I heard. And advice that I was given while at Apple.
He does have a say in where stores go though. There are not many cities that have stores in the actual city - Minneapolis is a good example. The MoA is really in Bloomington, which is no where near the Downtown area of Minneapolis.
I know that Apple is planning/wants to open a store in Boston, down Boylston Street. They are negotiating "the look" as the neighborhood committee needs to approve it and to do so the store needs to fit in with the historic architecture of the neighborhood. They may or may not be able to do so to the satisfaction of the neighborhood, and if not, no Apple Store. Hardly Steve's fault and I'm sure this is not a unique situation as nanny and others have already pointed out.

My nearest Apple store is on the outskirts of Toronto, 700km away.

Whatever. Idiots.
5th largest city in the US and no Apple store presence downtown. The fact that there isn't one there may not be his fault. Space availability, permits, cost. Could be a number of reasons why there isn't one where you want it.
Is that why every other major retailer has opened stores up in the last two years? There is still tons of space. I assume others get the same permits as anywhere else... non-issue. Cost? Oh... right -- that glass cube he's building for his ego across from Radio City Music Hall must be cutting into his last dime.

Well, Apple is certainly doing this to piss you off and because they don't want your money. Maybe the availability of all those other stores is the reason they haven't built one? A couple of years ago, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Maybe you should stop whining so much.
And when Steve and I get done, I'll make sure he never builds an Apple store anywhere near you.

After the kidnapper proves to me that the gun is loaded to convince me to get into the car to go to Philly, I'll know that there isn't an Apple store downtown.
