My first DVD player was an RCA. I gave it to a friend when I got a newer Panasonic. It's been 7 years, and it's still working.
It was the cheapest DVD player I could find at the time.
My VCR is an RCA - it saw a LOT of use because I was taking a night class taught by television, only I was working when the local broadcast of the lecture was done - so it recorded a 2.5 hour lecture twice a week for an entire semester.
It still works, and it works very well - except for the fact that it only mono output.
I only occasionally use it now, but before I got cable again (last december) - my rabbit ears were attached to it.
My parents have a chap Go-Video DVD/VCR combo - and it is still working after 4 years. And it works well. It's the one the kids use to watch their video tapes and DVDs, so it gets a LOT of use.
Sometimes the cheaper products last longer than the more expensive ones.
It doesn't have features like composite or s-video that you find in more expensive DVD players, it doesn't play DVD-R media, but damnit - it has lasted a hell of a lot longer than expensive DVD players that I bought.

Re: HD DVD players go on sale
from what i have read recently, they are having trouble keeping them in stock and will be ramping up production on this and future HD units.
that's good for the rest of us!
for me, HD is part of a media center / front row set-up - i don't think i will buy a stand alone unless i go the X-BOX 360 route, which is very possible.
anything you type can and will be used against you

I'm definitely going to wait to see who wins the format war.

That's the TV they're using. It DOES support HDCP (which most middle and high-ends and probably a lot of the low-end ones out now with HDMI do too).
What is HDCP? My cable/TV is connected to my TV through HDMI. Is this now yet another, "better" connection?

hi-def copy protection, if I'm not mistaken.
That's cool - it makes sure my hi-def copies are protected - awesome. I hate it when files get corrupted.

It actually stands for High-bandwidth digital content protection.

Arguably it won't give you "better" quality - it is really just copy protection combined with HDMI. Some networks want to downgrade the quality signal if it isn't going over a HDCP connection though.
