No. It was directed at Ra's post. Sorry, I seem to have clicked on the wrong post reply. Do that sometimes when I'm in a hurry or just tired. blush

Chinese stereos.  You can tell they don't love their gadgets the way the Japanese do.

Wrong-o. Big time. They just can't afford them yet.

Also they haven't focused on quality yet.

There was once a time when Japanese products were considered inferior, you know.

Re: Corporations are drowning in Cash!

Sassy:  I have not talked against taxes. What I have said is that on top of the approximately 40% of the taxes collected by the Federal and local governments (per every gallon of fuel at the pump), the gas station owner, and every one of the oil industries involved with that gallon of fuel also pay property tax.

Now, the subject of property tax is a huge subject by itself, and it would take quite a lot of arguing here. In the cities and towns where I have lived, I have never noticed an industry abandoning their buildings or facilities, nor leaving behind a mess they are not responsible for cleaning.

There are a couple of sectors where one can earn a living: the private sector, and the public sector.  The public sector employees (State, city, and Federal) earn their money, medical benefits, and retirement benefits from the private sector and its workers (industry, local grocery store, Home Depot, the local gas station, the hardware store, etc.). All of these workers pay taxes that are to the benefit of every State, city, borough, and Federal worker; therefore, the public sector can't survive without the private sector.

Companies just don't move into town, and then leave behind messes for the town to clean-up, at least not nowadays.

I disagree with only the last sentence of your post. Over the years -- and most recently in the Bush Administration's "Clean Air Act" relaxation of EPA regs, corporations have pretty much had a free ride when it comes to cleaning up their messes (and I do mean to say more than one. Don't know the count, but it must be in the hundreds, if not thousands. It's been going on for as long as I can remember).

For only the latest documentary on this topic read this transcript on PBS NOW link. If you do an archive search, you will likely find more than just this latest broadcast on this topic.

Recently, ExxonMobile is reported to be trying to get court mandated relief for their horrendous Exxon Vadez (sp) oil spill in Alaska at a time when they can well afford to continue the clean up themselves. If they are rolling in cash, why can't they take responsiblity for the mess they created at the hands of, IIRC, was a drunken sea captain instead of wanting the taxpayers to pay for it? If the B of D of ExxonMobile can pay their exCEO, Lee Raymond, billions of dollars in lifetime pay package, they can afford to pay to clean up any mess they make and was legally found guilty of creating.  That's my question. Of course, I'm sure Senator Stevens would disagree with me. He wants to drill for oil in his home state's pristine wilderness. roll

Re: Corporations are drowning in Cash!

In the case of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Alaska has already been compensated as mandated by court. However, part of the court mandate left an opening for reinstating the case. So now Alaska is reopening the case against Exxon. I don't know the details, but that is basically what is being done.
A hint of what is going on can be read here:
http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/paperchase/2 … 9886133528

Companies, home owners, everyone in the US, is liable for environmental pollution. For example, if in the process of selling a home it's found that a home's heating-oil tank has spilled fuel in the ground, the seller is responsible for the cleaning. That applies to corporations, gas stations, grocery stores, junk yards, and even an automobile owner (all members of the private or public sectors). It was not that way years ago, but things have changed.

You may find some cases that happened years ago where nothing has been done to solve the problem, while a lot has also been done in some instances. For example, the Hudson River was extremely polluted years ago, but now it's much cleaner. There was a scientific report relating to air pollution not too long ago; the report indicates  that the air in the US is so much cleaner now that the result will be greater global warming from the sun rays reaching earth.  These are two cases of numerous one can find on the Internet.
