Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

Are you sure that you put it in the [Graphics Options] portion of the config file? I'm not sure if putting it in a separate part will cause it to crash, but it might. Also, where exactly does it crash? When loading the game, loading the save, or just walking around? I've noticed that with VBOs off, it's a little unstable, but as long as you save often it's not that big of a deal.

the only place where you really need them off is matale grounds.  Most other places a decent video card will do you fine.

It crashes while walking around the grassy hills within a few seconds of loading up.  I have a save point from earlier that I think I'll try and use to see if it will be more stable.  Another thing I should try is turning on all of the nifty options and making the resolution something decent again.  For some reason games often "seem" to be less stable when on lower resolutions.

EDIT:  Oh, and yes, I put it under the [Graphic Options] part of the config file!  big_smile

I haven't even been able to make it to wherever the Matale's are hiding and I have a radeon 9800.  Up until this point I had all the graphic options turned on and it ran very nicely.  This is a rather large oversight on the part of the developer...  mad  mad  mad

Ooopsie!  There I go ranting with those disturbing smilies again! blush

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

Sometimes you happen to save right where an unstable part is. I've done it before, and fortunately had a save point from before. A word of caution: disable the hack before entering the ruins: they caused extreme instability when I tried it before. When playing through the game again, I didn't have any problems with the hack disabled.

I'm all for a birthday celebration. It looks like Venethia is already setting it up for us. wink

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

using a similar hack you can enable cheats, which is great (if you have previously played and beaten the game at least once before, without them) because you can get any item and like max out your strength so that you can kill Malak in 1 hit.  I just wish there was also a cheat to give you force powers and feats, which there doesn't seem to be.

If you don't like turning off VBOs, "just" install 10.3.7 and run KOTOR. Smooth as glass, no crashes. ;-)

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

My guess would be that this post will last as long as people keep on buying Kotor and discovering that the dang thing just doesn't work out of the box.  Just a guess though.  Anyone have any idea if 10.4.4 will offer the VBO fix?

In my preliminary testing on my Mac mini, it seems like 10.4.4 *finally* fixes the performance issue on the outdoor Dantooine levels. Can those of you having this problem verify with the KOTOR 1.03c patch and 10.4.4?

Figured one of the OS updates would. The PC ATI drivers had been patched for a lil bit before we got ours. Heres hoping still for KOTOR2 cheers.

What I think we all fail to realize is that Brad and Co. didn't have much to work with in the first place.

That doesn't seem to relate. It worked, then an OS update broke it, now it apparently works again.

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

Yeah, it pretty much was Apple screwing around that messed it up. Is there a fix for those with 10.3.9 (it was broken back then right)?

Just the same old 'disable VBO' hack, I think.

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

Uhm, I think it was ATI driver updates for both the PC and macintosh that broke it since the same bug appeared on PCs.

I wish there were still independent video driver updates for OS X.

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

I hope no one minds me bringing up this old thread (who am I kidding, I've seen all the mockering in the previous posts... wink)

I just wanted to share a solution that I found here:

http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/ind … pic=20257.

(It's about using Open GL Profiler to override the settings)

I tried it, on my Mac Mini (1,42 GHz G4 w Radeon 9200, OS X 10.4.6) and it seems to work like a charm. Dantooine was totally unplayable before, no it runs very ok.

Re: KOTOR worst port job ever?

I think disabling the VBOs is a better option. I've had a few crashes in Dantooine, but I haven't had anything to the point of where they describe. It's really only one change in the config file. shrug However, for your Radeon 9200, I suppose you don't have much of a choice. tongue

That's my point, this is a solution that seems to work fine on the 9200, where there really are no other options. The downside is that the game seems to be more crash-prone at some locations.
