Welcome to the forums. Generally, it's not a good idea to revive threads over 1 month old. This is a lot older than 1 month. If you feel like you need to say something on the same topic as an old thread, generally it's more acceptable to start a new topic about it.

They say that the most secure computer is the one not connected to the internet.
That's why security experts recommend Telstra BigPond.

Ya, Linux rules as long as you like apps that work like crap and look like ass.

I like ass. On the right female anyway.

So you can use FireWire iPods as hard drives… can you do that with USB2 iPods?

It was done purely to appeal to the PC market, which is sad because FW400/800 both destroy USB.  This is especially true since most people have slow USB devices sitting on their USB bus.

I certainly hope they go back to using FW in the future as every single Socket 754/939/modern Intel motherboard I've seen has at least one FW400 port.

Well, not purely. In Apple's constant efforts to make the iPod thinner and thinner and thinner, sacrifices have to be made. These days if a generation of iPod came out and it were thicker than the last, people would have a hissy fit. The truth is that the firewire hardware chipset for the iPod is larger than the USB 2.0. Both, and th iPod is too large. So they had to drop one of them for the fifth gen. Firewire or USB 2.0. Firewire (don't get me wrong, I love this technology), when it comes down to it, is old(er), (slightly) slower, and a lot less universal. USB 2.0 is newer, (slightly) faster, and is backwards compatible with USB 1.x (albeit slower, but if you hook it up to a USB 1.x mac, you can still put songs on your fifth gen.).

So think business here. If you were Apple, in the business off making money, and had to drop one of them, which would you choose? The newer technology that apeals to all of your market? Or the older one that doesn't? And don't give me all the Apple is leaving us behind crap. Your fifth gen will still work with your mac with USB. If you have a big library, you won't notice the difference because you'll have to leave it loading overnight anyways. And for a few songs the time difference is trivial.

My guess is that Apple made a hard decision, but in order to appeal to the 'sexy, thin iPod' factor, they had to do what they had to do.

People bitched when they dropped the floppy drive. But we can see now it was a smart move.

I'm thinking if the worst thing you have to bitch about is iPods going USB 2.0 with no FireWire, then you really need to find something better to do with your energies.

Like bitch over the lack of any new intel mac towers...
Or bitch over the higher price of the new intel minis...
Or bitch over the performance of KOTOR on macs... wink
Or bitch over the intergrated gpu chipsets in the macbooks...

The list goes on.

Inflight Power Charger Tops Off Electronics Using an Airplane’s Headphone Jack

Couldn't this theoretically work with a computer's headphone jack as well? And would it charge as fast as USB 2?

Cool.  Pity you can't carge computers via usb though.  Then we could extend the relatively small battery life of our iBooks and Powerbooks.  Hey!  We can bitch about that now!
