Another Canadian leaving

First SS, now me.

I got my regular force callup approved and I'm off to Petawawa for two months then to Edmonton with the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry (PPCLI) for a few more of weeks of training and orientation, then off to  Afghanistan for 6 months, then another tour later, possibly.

Combat Engineering, just like for real.

I volunteered, so I've no cause for complaint.

This means odd-ball, nuanced and out-there interpretations of world events will have to be put on hold, unless someone else wants to take over.

I still have two weeks at my home unit in Ottawa before I go.

Chimo!

I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you.  That amuses me.

I hope that you have a fruitful (construction-wise) and otherwise boring tour(s) in Afghanistan.

And drop off the poppies with [Tycho?] before coming back, y'hear?

Re: Another Canadian leaving

My garden is full of poppies. They grow like weeds here. There used to be a big stand of pot plants in the training area of CFB Petawawa, too. I don't know if it's still there.  Maybe Farmerkev could grow whatever you fellows need, if you asked him nice.  I haven't checked the regulations recently, but I'm pretty sure exporting heroin in the CF is frowned upon.

There's almost no chance I'll be sent anywhere but Afghanistan, unless something happens in the meantime and I'm returned to my unit in Ottawa. Then I'll do my 6 months behind a desk.

But the pay's good.  Regular force benefits plus travel and overseas pay.

I also put in for a civilian support job in Afghanistan, but those get filled pretty fast.

You've no idea.

Wikipedia says

Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) is an infantry regiment in the Canadian Forces (CF), belonging to 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (1 CMBG). It is one of the most decorated regiments in the CF. It currently consists of four battalions, three in the Regular Force and one in the Reserve Force (militia). The PPCLI is ranked second in the order of precedence for the regular infantry, and 38th in the infantry militia.

Of course, that's Wikipedia.

You'll be missed.

Because of my age this will probably be my last opportunity for an overseas post as a reservist.

The last time I served overseas, the helmets were steel, not kevlar.
