Re: Zero Calories = ?

All of the soda at my apartment 25 mg per 8 oz serving which is roughly 1.25% (1/80th) of RDA, at 12 oz it's roughly 0.01875% (1/53rd) of RDA, and at 16 oz its roughly 2.5% (1/40th) of RDA. I try to keep it under 2 liters a day. You could also avoid the sodium issue altogether by sticking to Diet Rite, or regular or flavored water. I drink nearly as much water as well.

Yes caffeine is a diuretic. I avoid the stuff for the most part.

Does caffeine accelerate your metabolisym? So that's why people who live off coffee and barely sleep get thinner... I thought it was the complete lack of alternative sources of energy.

Actually, you don't lose a lot of weight drinking diet sodas. The sodium content is pretty high.

No it's not.

But studies have shown that people who drink strictly diet soda eat more and therefore make up for not ingesting a caloric drink.

35-45mg sodium per 12 oz can is pretty high for people that drink a lot of soda a day.

I had a Boston Market frozen dinner for lunch today (chicken, mash potatoes, and veggies. 1,900 and something mgs of salt! 35-45mgs per serving of soda is nothing, even if you have 6 a day.

Jeesh, a couple of tablespoons of salad dressing would be more sodium than those 6 sodas.

That's roughly 19/20 (95%) of the RDA for sodium.

Ridiculous! My doctor says no more than a 1,000mgs for me a day.

I have high blood pressure and cholesterol (genetic) and I'm supposed to watch my sodium intake. I was too hungry to care today as I was painting outside all day and was starving. But it is due to my health that I always read labels.

It's so hard though. I try to eat right by eating lots of fresh tomatoes, for example. I use no fat balsamic rice vinegar. Gues what? That's right, LOADED with sodium. I need some flavor though...

It's a no win situation. I got watch my cholesterol and stay away from meat and cheeses. Yet I would still like to enjoy the act of eating and everything good seems to pack TONS of sodium.

Re: Zero Calories = ?

The 2400 mg RDA (I could have sworn it was 2000 mg the last time I heard) is standard maximum for people w/o special dietary concerns. In the UK the RNI (Recommended Nutritional Intake) for sodium is 1600 mg.

Edit based on my earlier 25 mg per 8 oz soda figure:
8 oz = ~0.01041667% (~1/96) of RDA
12 oz = ~0.015625% (~1/64) of RDA
16 oz = ~0.02083333% (~1/48) of RDA

Re: Zero Calories = ?

35% is 1%RDA, it says right here on the soda can.

So I could drink 95 diet cream sodas, or on Boston Market Dinner. Hmmm. I almost had a Boston Market turkey with stuffing for dinner tonight (had a big salad instead): 1930 mgs of sodium - 81% RDA. Still pretty steep.

Re: Zero Calories = ?

They round the percentages. How they round depends on the company.
If 24-47 mg = 1% & 49-71 mg = 2% they round down
If 12-35 mg = 1% & 36-59 mg = 2% they round correctly
If 25-47 mg = 2% & 49-71 mg = 3% they round up

I recommend Coke C2 if you can find it. It is basically half diet and half regular Coke. I feel it is a good compromise when I feel like drinking a Coke. When I am at a place where I get to pour my own fountain drink I mix my own C2.

There isn't any cholesterol in 95% of chips, nor trans-fats (the worst type of fat for peoples health found in meat and cheeses). Also, the new trend is to use "sunflower" oil which is much better for you.

There is more miss-information in this thread than is the norm in Mac-Addict. roll Do you guys not read the labels, or simply don't believe them? roll

Trans-fats are certainly the worst type of fat but they are a man-made type of fat created by chemical altering unsaturated fat so that it more closely resembles the structure of saturated fat (which is actually what's found in meats and cheeses). It's almost invariably converted to VLDL cholesterol or at least acts as if it were VLDL cholesterol. And while it is accepted that excess saturated fat and the associated LDL cholesterol are bad for you there is a school of thought that limiting saturated fats too much is bad as well because it forces your body to manufacture it's own saturated fats & LDL cholesterol from unsaturated fats and it theorized that humans are particularly inefficient at doing so often creating increased amounts of VLDL cholesterol as well as making LDL cholesterol.

Actually a calorie is the energy to heat one gram of water one degree centigrade.  However, I believe nutritional labels actually refer to kilocalories as calories.  So one "calorie" on a can of soda is enough energy to raise one kilogram of water, one degree centigrade.

Re: Zero Calories = ?

All I know is that I was told by my doctor to eat 8+ eggs a week to lower my cholesterol. The choice of eating more eggs or tablets...

So I have 3 eggs 3 times a week at breakfast. (+ whatever else is used in cooking) Not only is my cholestrol now really, really low (it was dangerously high before), but I am more enegetic and am loosing weight. I'm not eating any different, other than eating a few more eggs. My cholesterol turned around in a week. It was off the scale at the bottom end after 3 weeks.

Calories, shmalories, a well rounded diet negates most of this thread so far.

It might be worthy of mentioning that I drink (on average) about 10L of milk, 2L of beer, eat quite a lot of red meat and hardly ever touch rice. I don't have coke often, fish n' chips once or twice a week. Rarely any processed food at all. I also ride my bike about 15 minutes a day to and from Uni.

I've been drinking Vintage seltzer lately. No calories, ingredients listed as "Carbonated water, Natural flavor," and it tastes a LOT better than Diet Malted Battery Acid.

No, that's a kilocalorie.  A calorie is the amount of energy it takes to heat one millilitre of water 1 degree C.

Re: Zero Calories = ?

calorie: either of two units of heat energy
• (also small calorie) the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water through 1 °C (now usually defined as 4.1868 joules).
• (also small calorie) the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water through 1 °C, equal to one thousand small calories and often used to measure the energy value of foods.
