Re: Evangelical Christians protest peace

why the hell do people keep quoting this testament and that testament? it's all been rewritten, edited and sanitized for the church's protection anyway.

what's up with people that they cannot grasp the simple fact the bible is some vague interpretation of a collection of reports from people that had their brains baked in the desert sun, then edited for emphasis to support the church's ruling party's power grabbing policy?

Well, most christians stop at the Bible.  Joseph Smith brought us new testaments of Jesus Christ and his ministry here in North America...

The dead sea scrolls, when found were almost exactly like the oldest MT that we had (I think from the 14th century) - indicating that there were not changes and revisions from before Christ to the current time.

The documentary hypothesis for the authorship of the Pentateuch has pretty much bleen blown to pieces now, as it would have required the different pieces moving back and forth and influencing each other an insane number of times - yet none of these "pre pentateuch" texts have ever been found, nor has any reference to them ever been found. Furthermore, it is clear that the author of the pentateuch was familiar with Egyptian geography and unfamiliar with palestinian geography.

Sorry - but there just is absolutely no evidence for what you suggest. None at all.
Not for the old testament, not for the new testament.

I don't see why, by and large, you'd actually need to alter the text in order to come up with a different interpretation ; the effort would have to huge and it wouldn't be that useful.

Re: Evangelical Christians protest peace

yeah, but the Book of Enoch is the 3rd most found manuscript in the scrolls and it's only still used by the Ethiopian Orthodox

Still doesn't alter one's view on interpretation vs literal meaning of the Bible.  Most Jews don't look at it literally.  Aren't women supposed to be quiet in church and ask questions about sermons to their husbands in the home?

The canon process, for both Jews and Christians, happened long after the last canonized books were written. A book not making the canon process does not mean it is not worthy of study (I don't know if Enoch is), it simply means it did not meet the canon criteria.

One of the criterias for the old testament was that it be written in Hebrew, the only exceptions that were made were Ezra and Daniel (Daniel was partially written in Hebrew). Enoch I don't believe was written in Hebrew.

But Enoch not being mainstream canon does not detract or alter the books that are mainstream canon.

That verse is taken out of context as you are trying to use it.
The church was having a very specific problem that Paul was specifically addressing.

Sternum wrote:

A week into one of the most severe crises the Middle East has seen in years, Israel is getting an influx of support from an unusual source.

More than 3,400 evangelical Christians have arrived in Washington to lobby lawmakers as part of the first annual summit of Christians United for Israel.

Delegates have come from all 50 states and have 280 meetings on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Pastor John Hagee said.

Pastor Hagee, the main organiser, said the event was the first of its kind.

"For the first time in the history of Christianity in America, Christians will go to the Hill to support Israel as Christians," he said.

The thousands of Christians in Washington - who came and are staying at their own expense - will be urging the US government "not to restrain Israel in any way in the pursuit of Hamas and Hezbollah", he said.

John Hagee is the pastor of the 18,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, and a long-time fervent supporter of Israel.

In common with many American evangelicals, he believes that God gave the land to the Jewish people and that Christians have a Biblical duty to support it and the Jews.

His latest book, Jerusalem Countdown: A Warning to the World, interprets the Bible to predict that Russian and Arab armies will invade Israel and be destroyed by God.

This will set up a confrontation over Israel between China and the West, led by the anti-Christ, who will be the head of the European Union, Pastor Hagee writes.

That final battle between East and West - at Armageddon, an actual place in Israel - will precipitate the second coming of Christ, he concludes.

I used to think that religious fundamentalism was a problem for third-world countries where money and education were scarce. Even after reading this article, I still find it hard to believe that there are "good Christians" in the United States that would actively work to prevent peace-keeping measures from stopping a war in which thousands of completely innocent bystanders, including children, are being killed. Especially since their motives are based on a book in which people turn into salt, live inside whales, and talk to burning bushes.

The only more disturbing thing is that they don't belong to a tiny fringe cult -- there's 40 million of them, and they wield a frightening chunk of political power.

I'd like to know what the sentence I bolded has to do with these fundamental Christians living in a Nation that has religious freedom.  And I sorta doubt these 40 million odd people you are talking about fall into the ranks of the rich and educated.

I'd also like to take this moment to thank the Democrats, the progressive movement,  and those responsible for expanding franchise.

Remember that there are 40 million of these people the next time you hear Bush or McCain say something "pandering" to this group via the mass media, okay?

Re: Evangelical Christians protest peace

What is this "State of Israel" thing you guys are talking about? Last time I checked my notebook....wait I'll go do that....

Yes, so now that I'm looking I have yet to see a mentioning to say there...oh yes, that Israel....the little bully, well...someone needs to kick their asses in a guerilla fight and make a point that they're not invincible and that their really only a shadow of what they were back in the sixties....

And the guy on NPR today, pretty much said thats whats happening...Hezbolla is going to win, b/c Israel is being put under to much pressure, and guerilla tactics (rocket launching near residential areas, no matter how inhumane it sounds is pretty damn smart)...will reign the day.

Israel will look foolish, and they'll be put in their place...and the middle east won't be called, "The Middle East featuring Israel" it'll be "The Middle East" a bunch of corrupt, shakey, institutions....whatever

I'm hungry. I found this great Vietimenise joint its got Terrier dog meat...it was actually pretty good, I didn't know what it was until I asked, and I did cry myself to sleep, but after its all swallowed and exceted you gotta admit it was pretty damn good.

Re: Evangelical Christians protest peace

Paul, moreso that any other writer before him, championed a very revolutionary idea where all are one and united in a universal manner, regardless of social, racial, political, classification, and even regardless of gender.

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor freeman, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one [person] in union with Christ Jesus."

To claim it doesnt matter what social class you were, or race, and that it doesnt even matter if you are male or female was a huge contribution to even the way we today think of words like "freedom" "brotherhood" or "unity."

To turn around and claim he was sexist because he asked women to respect the beliefs of non-believers they were trying to preach is really presenting a false charicature of a radical writer.

Re: Evangelical Christians protest peace

I live in San Antonio where John Hagee has his church.

He's got a massive following worldwide. Locally he's considered one of the city's major religious leaders. I work with a couple of his followers and they swallow everything he says, they act like he's God's mouthpiece.

They believe.

They never question anything about him; like how they're just getting by after giving money to his church and he sleeps in a multi-million dollar mansion in a very wealthy gated community.

Hagee and his followers need to watched.

But then again, they may be right. angel
