Ventrilo Question
I'm really interested in getting a nice USB Plantronics Headset and setting up a dedicated Ventrilo server for my guild on a 17" Powerbook that was recently repaced with my new iMac...
But I'm a bit unclear as to whether the way I want it to work can actual happen.
What I want is to use the headset and have Vent just pipe the voice chat through the headset... but I want all game music, effects, system sound to still go to my speakers and subwoofer (as in not have music and voice in the headset.
Im completely unfamiliar with Vent... so I havent experimented with it yet... and unil I find out that I can actaully use it the way I want, I wont be buying a headset.
Anyone know if what I want is passible?

Re: Ventrilo Question
Waaaaay simple.
For game sounds via externals
------------------------------------
Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Sound -> Output -> [whatever]
For chatting via vent + headset
--------------------------------------
Launch Ventrilo.
Setup Button.
Set input and output to your headset.
— done and done —
i <3 vent. I can't wait 'til it is "done".

Re: Ventrilo Question
Hey Bubs... since you seem to be in the know...
Anyreason I should go Vent over TeamSpeak?
Also, will Vent run decent in Rosetta? New machine's an Intel, and it appears the Vent is all PPC, but the TS 3rd party client appears to be UB...
Any recommendations?
If I'm in a mixed guild of Macs and PCs, which would be the more compatible choice?
I figure I can set the powerbook as the server and use the PPC server app... but hows the lcient goign to do in Rosetta?

Re: Ventrilo Question
The wolfenstein division is using TS instead of ventrillo. The free server version of ventrillo only allows 8 simtulaneous connections. Any more than that and you have to pay rent a server. The free version of TS allows 20 connections.

Re: Ventrilo Question
Heh, some times in order so that I can still have semi private conversations while in a raid Ill have Vent running on one server with one button for PTT and TS running on another server with another button set for PTT. Its really obvious that way how diffrent peoples voices sound when you do that. TS sounds more like a "phone voice" to me while I was really suprised the first time I ran vent, I thought it had some kind of robotic voice filter on by default. Vent has always sounded a little creepier to me imo

Direct User to User binds for the win. Like a private channel with just your friends. Although this may be a Ventrilo only feature.

Re: Ventrilo Question
My guild has been using Teamspeak in battlegrounds lately. I've never used Ventrillo, so I'm not sure how they compare, but we've had no trouble at all with it, and it's free.

Re: Ventrilo Question
Vent is free. Vent is easy. Vent works just fine, so I've never had reason to go to TS. I think it is just a matter of whatever your guild starts off with.

Re: Ventrilo Question
vent isnt free. You need a server that you pay for to use it. Team Speex is 100% free. They supply you with the server as well as the software. TS and Vent are both a few versions behind the windows counterpart. Vent for example needs to be run in Speex codec, any other will disable outbound and inbound chat. Also as an adminstrator, mac users cannot move peoples from channel to channel. THough windows admins can just click and drag other users to another channel. Vent is better because the sound quality is better. Team Speex is really like a radio quality, if not less. Ventrilo is very close to stero or digital sound. Depending on what mic the other person is using. Also with vent, mac users cannot record conversaions. http://www.ventrilo.com/faq.php for most of your questions answered. Also they give some links to where you can rent a server. Depending on how many people you want to have on your vent atst. Also vent is a universal binary app not PPC.
I own my own vent server on a mac, so any questions I can tell you exactly what you need to know.

Re: Ventrilo Question
I was clarifying a mischaracterization you were throwing out there - Vent is free for <20 users logged in at the same time. Last time I checked, I really didn't care for having a debate of Ventrilo versus TeamSpeex. Since you insist, I will oblige...
Ventrilo Sever software, Macintosh - FREE (20 client)
TeamSpeak Server software, Macintosh - n/a (I can't seem to find a Mac Sever package)
Ventrilo Client Software, Macintosh - FREE
TeamSpeex Client software, Macintosh - FREE (third party development, unsupported - no updates since January, 2006)
Ventrilo Server, offsite, 100 slots - @$200
TeamSpeak Server, offsite, 100 slots - @$100
As you pointed out, quality is MUCH better for Ventrilo, so the extra $100 can easily be chalked up to the improved quality. Additionally, using the Speex codex is recommend, regardless of your VoIP server application choice. It is tighter, sounds great, and has a low "ping" on whatever server you choose. My guild just recently purchased a 100 slot Vent Server. We like it. 'nuff said.
Insofar as "worthwhile" content <40 people? Um... Zul'Gurub, Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj, outdoor Raid events, UBRS, LBRS, and world events (such as the Scourge Invasion), as well as most of the content in the Expansion which will be focusing on 5-20 person raids. Last time I checked, there was a lot more to life than MC, AQ40, BWL, Naxx or Ony.

Re: Ventrilo Question
Eventually when you poke, you'll hit a nerve. Generally stalk and kill has been a pvp oriented guild, last or very close to last in PvE content progression. It angers me greatly that we are not able to keep up with our previous level of content progression and thus are only 1 boss ahead of the "pvp guild" or "ex-pvp guild". Dont take it as me trivializing your successes for that isn't what it is, its the fact you chose to point out the flaw/failing in mine that 'hit the nerve', even if you weren't intentionally doing so. Appologies to the OP for the derailment thusfar of your thread.
