Obnoxious answer: because it is Word and Word is a pile o' crap.
Honest answer: I have no clue. Have you tried the trashing preferences trick? Is this Word v.X or 2004? I used to have a devil of a time with v.X on my G4 at work, but 2004 works fine on my iBook at home.

I used to have problems with Word crashing repeatedly on launch and it was the result of a corrupted font. Way to build a stable app!

You might want to try Open Office, which is an open source suite of apps that covers pretty much everything MS Office has. I use it since months and I never had one single problem. i can open Powerpoint presentation, Excel tables, Word docs (without losing formatting). I really recommend you try it instead of MS Office

The only version of OpenOffice that's even close to native is NeoOffice. I can't say I like it. It's ugly, slow, and monolithic. The OpenOffice team was going to aquify the official OpenOffice with the 2.0 release, but those plans were scrapped. For now, OpenOffice is only really practical on Windows and Linux.

I have the crash on launch prob w/ Word 2004. How does one find a corrupted font, and how does one fix it?

EDIT: I figured it out after seeing some other threads...FontBook makes it really smurfin' easy. Killed the offending fonts, (which I had never heard of, BTW) rebooted, and voila, working Word once again.
