Does anyone still use setiathome?
I just joined the macaddict team yet it seems like this board is pretty slow. Does no one really care about seti much anymore?
Also, why are some people's computers "hidden"? I"m just curious why some people would want to hide what kind of hardware that their seti runs on.

Re: Does anyone still use setiathome?
I'm sure if you think about it long enough, you'll think of a reason that a person might not want their boss to know that they're running SETI on a VAX system or something.
Especially if their boss works for the company that owns said VAX.
Lots of people run SETI - we just don't post a lot in here. Really, this forum hasn't been too active since the BOINC switch and everybody got that squared away.

Re: Does anyone still use setiathome?
I had to drop it after the BOINC switch: no OS 9 version (for my old desktop) and I had too many problems getting the BOINC version running on my AlPB.

Re: Does anyone still use setiathome?
dvpierce pointed out one reason why people might hide their computers. I don't know about others, but I would expose my computers if I could choose which information would be disclosed. As it is, I feel that too much information is made available, down to patch level of OS.
I don't run BOINC on all of my computers, since they are unfortunately not supported

I used to feel the same way. Then I discovered that IP address and domain name don't show up when unhidden. So I guess I stopped caring that someone could see what OS I was using without other identifying info.
Then again, I'm not in charge of a clandestine S@H server farm; it's just a work laptop and my own comp at home. If my name was derekm-googleservernet I'd hide them (or maybe change my name first)
.
Oh, and to answer the original question, it IS very quiet in here. BOINC just works too well these days. Now if only I could get some of those enhanced S@H WUs that all the kids are talking about.

Re: Does anyone still use setiathome?
Hey, guys, has the Team MacAddict home page been removed? A member tried to access it and got the 404, so he wrote a letter to the mag to see what's going on. I can point him to the forum to learn about the BOINC switch if he doesn't already know, but is there anything else I should tell him?
Thanks...

IIRC, the founder of the team is/was Niko and login/password is lost. Therefore, the webpage listing at
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_dis … amid=30197
will always remain as is. Is there another page out there? No idea. It's up to the current staff to put something at http://www.macaddict.com/seti if they want the page to not be a 404.
To continue the theme of the thread... I'll check this forum once a week, but the place for any discussion is usually at the message board for a specific project, such as http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_index.php.
If someone does not know BOINC, I'd go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/.

I think he's busy turning his MacBook Pro into a lightsaber and putting that Star Wars kid to shame with his new dance routine.

Hmm, I thought I remembered that one of the moderators (dvpierce perhaps) had mentioned at some point that they had been given the password to the "classic" Peewee account. If true, then it should be possible to get the password set for the linked BOINC Peewee account. Of course, if there isn't a page anywhere to point to, this might be academic. I suppose we could just dump people directly to this forum, but that wouldn't be very "friendly".

I never said such a thing - and as far as I know, it's not true.

Re: Does anyone still use setiathome?
Yea, I did a search & didn't find anything, either. I'm going to go ahead and say it fell into the server black hole, since the alternative is that I'm delusional
Who was the moderator of this forum before you, dvpierce? I definately remember a post from someone who had indicated that they had missed the cutoff before the first classic -> BOINC account sync to get the email address fixed, and that they had been given the "keys" to the classic account. It may have been this same thread that originally revealed the hidden identity of "peewee" as the guy's dog. Of course, as I said, I might be delusional as well, and stitching together bits of random lore from years ago

There was such a thread (I started it), but the relevant post stated that there was no password passed down. Therefore, it's lost forever unless someone can guess the 12? digit numerical old S@H password (not a chance) or have access to the original email address. IIRC, the thread did state that the poster had access to the founder's S@H email account, but that is no longer relevant if the email address itself is no longer valid.

Re: Does anyone still use setiathome?
Darn! So it seems I'm not (completely) delusional, but still no dice
I don't suppose anyone who was running as peewee under Classic sah still has the software lying around, or at least the "user_info.sah" file from it? If so, then pasting the contents of that file into this form will return the password.
