Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

I have some various projects I've worked on in different Quicktime formats, such as .mp4, .mov, quicktime movies, etc.  I'm trying to put them into FCP to make a demo reel, with small clips of each.  I don't have the original tapes to cut from, I just have the finished products in one form or another.

FCP accepted the one QT movie just fine, but keeps giving me the error message "File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown." on the others files.

Anything I can do?  Any formats I can convert to to make them play together?  I have QT Pro if that helps.

All the files are playing fine in QT, but each of them, except the one that's a straight-up "Quicktime Movie", gives me that error message in Final Cut.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit - Does anyone have experience with Cinematize 2 from www.miraizon.com ?  I just d/l the demo, which limits extractions to 10 seconds, but the 10 second clip that it did for me actually went into FCP without a hitch!  And that was with one of the files that has given me a pain when I ripped it from the final disc with Handbrake, or tried to convert it to .mov or .mp4.  So, since Cinematize has worked in the demo, I'm willing to give it a shot, I'd just like to hear any comments from users before I make the plunge and buy.  Thanks!

2nd edit - Ripped via Handbrake and then converting the files to .dv in QT Pro seems to be working ok, but the .dv files have to be rendered in the timeline of FCP.

I guess what I'm asking, if anyone has experience, What's the best way to rip a non-commercial DVD with no copy protection to create usable files in FCP?  Thanks!

In QuickTime Pro, rather than exporting as .dv, export as a QuickTime Movie instead and use the DV/DVCPro codec. Also, make sure the audio is PCM, 16 bit, 48 kHz, stereo.

Re: Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

Droo - That seems to be working pretty well so far.  I still had my setting for Quicktime Movie as H.264, which seemed to be the problem.  I don't know why I didn't think to change it to the DV/DVCPro.

Another question... One of the files is in HDV1080i60.   QT will play the audio just fine, but against a white screen.

Is there something I can download somewhere to play both the picture and sound, and thusly, export it with the DV/DVCPro codec as well?

I know you were rhetorical...but I had some time while rendering

Maybe convert the HD clip into DVCPROHD and then scale it down in FCP, then let FCP re-render it as a DV/DVCPRO clip in the timeline.

Re: Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

My biggest problem with the HD clip is that QT Pro doesn't seem to have the codec to play it properly.  All I get is a white screen along with the audio.  I'm having trouble finding a place to d/l a codec so that QT will recognize the file properly, let alone export it.

Shaman - Darn you!  My sig is now obsolete because there actually IS something raisin-flavored!  I won't ask how you found that...   Time to think of a new sig...

How did you happen upon the HDV clip in the first place?  Does FCP open it up and play it fine?

Re: Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

The HDV clip is a project that I did some soundwork on at school.  I get the error message that I posed above when I try to put it into FCP.

I recorded in ProTools, and delivered the audio files to the director.  A few weeks later when the project was finished, he burned the final QT file to a CD for me.  I simply copied it over to my HD from the CD.  When it had the white screen problem, I tried bringing it over again, but the same results happened.  I've e-mailed the guy to see if I can get it some other way from him, but we've since graduated, and I haven't heard back from him.

The work is displayed on the site www.bookvideoawards.com  It's called The Thieves of Heaven.  I was able to d/l a small m4v file of it from the site, but I'd really like to have a nice high-quality version if at all possible.   From what I can tell, the codec is the only thing holding me back.

Re: Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

FCP 4.5  I plan up upgrading to the whole UB FCP Studio by year's end, because the upgrade is fairly inexpensive for all the software.

Re: Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

Do you have iMovie HD? As I recall, FCP didn't handle HDV natively until v.5, though iMovie did. If you can open it in iMovie, you should be able to export it in whatever format you need.

Re: Some QT files not Playing nice with FCP

Thanks Droo, I'll look into that as well.  My FCP does list itself as FCP HD, but I don't know what it's various HD capabilities are.
