Crossover Mac Beta released!
Firstoff, sorry if this is a repeat thread. I searched and couldnt find another. Correct me if I'm wrong.
This is some exciting stuff! Today the public beta of Crossover Mac was released. For those who dont already know, basically this means that you can run some windows apps on your Intel mac WITHOUT owning or running a copy of windows. They run kind of like OSX native apps. It is still beta, and very buggy, but it is really neat to see. Some amazing potential here.
Give it a shot! http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

Codeweavers are okay ; they actually contribute back the WINE project (who will have done most of the work for Crossover Office but Codeweavers haven't exactly been slack; so if you buy CX, consider donating to the Wine Project) unlike those smurfs at Transgaming.

Re: Crossover Mac Beta released!
I've been using it since alpha 2, and its been progressing nicely. I just hope they've gotten optical drive support working (DVD Shrink!), fixed DX/OpenGL (Half-Life 1 for Mac!) and alleviated the X Window dependancy (annoying). I'm Installing as we speak...
On the whshlist is a mechanism whereby UI elements are converted to their Aqua counterparts to make things more Mac-like. This goes far beyond just a theme. For example, the menu bar for the active window should be converted to an Aqua menu bar, and fixed to the top of the screen. Buttons, checkboxes, dialogs, etc should all be converted to Aqua. Apple already has done this to a certain extent with its Java implementation, but the developer must often choose to enable many Aqua goodies (such as the Aqua menu bar, for example).
Also, this is great news for those waiting for Photoshop to go unibin (as long as they don't mind buying/borrowing another copy of Photoshop).

Re: Crossover Mac Beta released!
I don't see the point in trying to aquify Windows apps like that ; most Windows apps struggle to conform to some kind of interface design ideas in the first place.
I'd far prefer if you could change the Window decorations for the quartzwm to be similar to Windows ones. A Classic/Mac OS X style divide would be nicest. Hopefully Shapeshifter will be able to theme on an app-specific basis in the future.

Sweet. Crossover Macs for the highly disproportionate number of Cross Dressers and GLb's that use Macs.

DVD Shrink works the same as it did in the Alpha 3. It only works for non-encrypted DVDs because it doesn't have drive support. Therefore you must browse to the DVD manually using "Open Files" and shrink assumes the files are not encrypted. Apps that run better include WinRar, CPU-z (missing some info) LogicWorks 5, and most of the officially supported apps (some of which currently do not work) including Photoshop. Really most apps that don't require XP exclusively, should work to some degree. I even got PCSX to launch but I can't get it to run a game because it can't see my optical drive. The CD-ROM plugin i'm using allows PCSX to read psx ISOs as CDs, so maybe I'll have some luck with that...

Re: Crossover Mac Beta released!
I've gotten IE6 running. VERY VERY useful for testing sites since I am a webmaster.
I'm trying HL and will report back.

Re: Crossover Mac Beta released!
You got IE6 working? Impressive.
It would load some pages (But not Macaddict) but then just "quit" when surfing other sites (CNN, ESPN and Google)
I'll play with it some more later.

Odd. I can't say I've tried insanely complex websites with it, but it has not crashed once on me. I've used it to test sites I do for work. Embedded flash documents even play very well for me :-).
I tried the half-life demo with no success though. :-/
I also can't get my favorite windows app, GRLevel2 (http://www.grlevelx.com/grlevel2/) to run :-(

Re: Crossover Mac Beta released!
No DX yet. You'll need to wait for the release version before the "chance" of running your app.

I have Office 2000 sucessfully running.
What was entertaining were all the simulated reboots during the install process.

Re: Crossover Mac Beta released!
I got IE 6 working, but I need to have Java installed for the one thing I need to be able to do. I was able to log in to the site at work and the install process for Java seemed to proceed fine, but as soon as IE tries to launch the applet, IE abruptly quits.
To be fair, the CrossOver web site says that Java hasn't been tested and probably won't work. I guess they are right. Oh well, I suppose I can get an OEM version of Winblows and get Boot Camp for free. I suppose I could try Parallels, but I would still have to buy and install Winblows on my Mac, which is what I am trying to avoid.
