Is that right? OS X 10.4 played catch-up to promised feature set of Vista? Is that what you are saying? I didn't understand that to be true. I had always thought that Vista was playing catch-up to the actual feature set in about 10.2 or 10.3. I suppose it is going to depend on which features, specifically, sure, but I was think that on an overall type basis.

I'd say Apple did in 10.4 what Microsoft said they'd do in Vista. Now Apple will do in 10.5 what Microsoft might think about doing in Vista+1.

So long as Vista remains to be released Apple isn't catching up to anything but itself and maybe some parts of linux.

Though 10.3 wasn't quite where Vista will be, 10.4 exceeds vista. It includes features Vista was supposed to have. (*cough* Spotlight) However, how can you play "catchup" with something that hasn't been released yet? sneaky

Well Vista was supposed to be released around the same time as 10.4 and at the time it had features that 10.4 added in. I'm still trying to find the source of where 10.5 is built on 10.3 though...

In a sense it could be considered true. Some of the technologies in Leopard do have their roots in Panther. The proposed Finder is one, though at least minor updates have occurred. Built in fax capabilities were also introduced back then. Expose is another Panther original. The basic "framework" system is as well. IIRC, of course that could have been introduced in Jaguar. A few of the other APIs were introduced in Panther as well. The kernel actually predates Panther in some form though like the finder has seen various updates since it was introduced. But then that would make built on 10.3 in the same sense it was built on 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, & 10.4.

What I heard/read was that 10.4 was an offshoot from 10.3 and that development of 10.5 follows directly from 10.3 and not from 10.4. Thus some of the stability increases and such. Wish I could remember where I got this info from...

Considering many of the features demoed seem to flow more from a 10.3 > 10.4 > 10.5 rather than 10.3 > 10.5, I'd say they were talking out of their arse. I do think some things might end up going in a direction where they might have ended up if 10.4 had not have existed anyways, just not necessarily due to backtracking.

I'm not sure if that's the case. From what I read 10.4 wasn't intended to be part of the main evolution, it just includes features that were tacked onto 10.3 and rushed out the door. (Think core image, LaunchD, Dashboard etc.) These features were supposed to be part of what 10.5 is now (10.5 would have been the real 10.4).

Basically development forked to produce what is known as 10.4 and features were added in from the branch that is leading to the true 10.4, 10.5.

That still doesn't mesh with history. Core Image & Video have all the earmarks of an evolution from the concepts spawned by Core Audio. Additionally, Core Animation seems, for now, to be the ultimate evolution of the previous ideas. Dashboard always felt, at least, to me like an extension of Expose's capabilities and a precursor to some sort of virtual desktops concept.

On a side note, I'm not real familiar with LaunchD. Could someone please bring me up to speed on that item?

Oh yeah, I dumped Vista because it just got too wonky after 2 or 3 days. At least XP can usually hold its water for a week or 2 between reinstalls.

Windows is an expendable supply. Every so often it just gets used up and has to be replenished, like toilet paper.

Yeah if that is indeed the case that sucks, but for the sake of not relying on a competitor as my only source of information, what do some of you who've tried it say?

Don't get me wrong... I love macs but i'm also very fluent with windows...

To me it seems like you lack troubleshooting abilities??
I guess what i'm getting at... Is people with attitudes like yours is why "windows guys" hate us so much. And why they won't bother coming to look at what the mac has to offer....

Maybe that's why you love your mac smile It just works...

I thought Vista was a from the ground up new OS. Why are they using old functionality like registry or is this not a new OS and just a rehash of XP?

I'm guessing that they hate us more for the fact that are computer are easier to maintain than our attitudes. Just saying what I just said could easily be misconstrued as having an "attitude", whereas you can't really misconstrue the PITA maintance necessary to keep a windows box running.
