Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

Well... my mom is now the proud owner of a pink Razr (on VZW) as of last night. It's perfect for her, she'll never need the "pro" features that are locked down anyway. I myself have an LG Chocolate (VX8500) and it's pretty cool.

No, I was arguing against your comment that the RAZR costs more because it's thinner like thin laptops. Sleek gadgets almost always cost a lot more than the standard models, but only because people are willing to pay more for them, not becasue it actaully costs a few hundred dollars more to produce. Like with the old PowerBooks and iBooks, it's a common practice to design a thin model, then solder off some features and place it in a larger casing and sell it for a few hundred dollars less.

I suppose the R+D to make said gadgets thiner is free, right?

Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

I just got my RAZR tonight. I like it - nice and small/thin; I don't even think the UI is that bad. Sync'd fine as well, even though when I was activating it the Verizon tech said that the only Bluetooth feature supported is the wireless headset.http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/wtf.gif So yeah, immediately I got the Verizon sux vibe.

They suck anyway making you get your pix over via SD card (or pay), having one lame ring tone (I just want one that sounds like a normal phone - guess I'll try to find one and pay for it mad), and having one wallpaper, etc, etc, etc.

Other than the Verizon complaints, great phone!big_smile

Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

i would def. recommend buying a TransFlash card.

But I really hate the interface on the new Razr. It's pretty atrocious.

I need to find a good reliable phone but I really don't want to go with a RAZR. Maybe 2 years ago it was cool to have one, but now it is so overdone and old news, what some might consider a status symbol(sorry, that was like 2 years ago), really is old hat. Let's face it, when the phone had been out for a year and a half, that's when all the mothers and fathers caught wind of it and started buying it and kept on buying it. There has to be a better choice. Plus it's a flip phone.

It sounds like you consider a cell phone to be a status symbol!

wink

(I only say that because none of the above concerns enter my mind when choosing a cell phone.)

Yeah I guess it does sound like that doesn't it?lol
Maybe the phrase status symbol is inaccurate. What I was trying to compare it to is out-of-date fashion and ugly trends. For some reason, I don't attribute any kind of status to anyone for their phones, maybe because they don't cost $75,000. But a new expensive car, I involuntarily attach status to that. I can't help it.

I have to say though, mom can text message and also enter people into her contacts list. She's a little anti-tech, so for her that's a big step.

You can send any sound you want to the phone for use as a ringer...just edit it so the file size is  350k or less, save as mp3, then change the extension to .mid and email it to your number@vzwpix.com, example

5552349876@vzwpix.com

When it shows up as a pix message, choose to save the sound, then select it as your ringer.

big_smile

I'll send you a sample or two from my phone if you PM me your number. There's been rumors that verizon can see the activity, and if you do it alot they'll block you from receiving files, but it hasn't happened to me yet...

Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

^^^^^^^^Thanks a lot, much appreciated big_smile, but I don't have the e-mail as part of my package as I have the most basic plan offered - $39.99 for 450 minutes/free weekends. Like I said, I hardly use my phone except to coordinate with my wife the pick-up of my kids at daycare if necessary when I'm on the road.

What's the difference to do this with T Mobile?

Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

knobtwirler- if you read last month's Mac Addict How-To, it isn't blocked on T-Mobile and Cingular so you won't have any issues via bluetooth.  Also something I've noticed on recent Cingular low-end Samsungs/LGs with bluetooth, the bluetooth is for handsfree/car kit usage only.  I hope this isn't going to be a new trend with GSM Samsungs on Cingular/T-Mobile sad

Also if you do email ringers/wallpapers to the phone, it can be either username@tmomail.net or 1235556789@tmomail.net    The good thing about T-Mobile, you can manage that setup on "My Account" up

Edit: ooops, forgot to also note that T-Mobile/Cingular max MMS is ~248k so careful with emailing mp3 ringtones eek

I figured that last night and tried it, made an .mp3 file that is 105k, changed it to .mid and emailed it, never got it, twice. But the first time I mailed it as an .mp3 by accident it got the message but dropped the attachment.
I know this all started about bluetooth and I'll try that next but my computer doesn't have it, will try another computer for that.

If Bluetooth does work, the dongles can be had for $30 ($20 on sale).

Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

T-Mobile recently started to filter MMS attachments so you may need to change your email client to text only, no signature, ~120 characters(including spaces) then give the attachment a shortened 8-character name. Its possible the MMS server randomly checks.  When all else fails, if you have a domain name create a wap subdomain and download that way(you'll need T-Zones).

I know with prepaid my account hasn't been changed by the recent filtering but then again I'm waiting out my Cingular contract till I get an answer from TMO's tech support as it seems to affect people by region/markets.  heh, 10 more days till I sign up then 10 days until I can port my number big_smile

ConnertheCat, yeah that is my suggestion but the safest bet is to write down the sku from the Apple Store's BT adapter listing then check CompUSA, etc.  From what I've read there are generic BT adapters that work great on a Mac then others which are non-complient to Apple's BT drivers hmm

Re: Anyone have a RAZR phone?

Bluetooth works great, but my RAZR won't recognize the file type. Any suggestions? I made an .mp3 and renamed it .mid.
The name was 4 characters long, which worked. Should be a different file type I suppose.
