Sound problems

I just got a new dual-core iMac and I transferred everything over from my 17" G4 PB. UT2004 was working fine on my PB, but on my iMac I don't hear any of the voices when entering taunts, orders, etc from me or from anybody else. Also my voice keybinds won't work, they all say "Defend the base" instead of what I've chosen.  I was (and am) running 3369.2.

Any ideas what the problem is? Should I just reinstall, or do you think tossing my ini file will fix it? Is there any way to fix it without losing all my settings?

Re: Sound problems

I'd start with renaming the .inis (user and ut2004). You don't have to trash them. A rename or moving them works too. If that fixes the problem you can then open up the new inis and the old ones side by side to make compairisons. I'm not sure how well 2k4 drag copies. You may want to rename the whole folder then reinstall. After the install replace files from your renamed folder.

Is bootcamp an option?

Re: Sound problems

Are kidding? Soil my beautiful new iMac with Windows? NEVER!

Really, it would be kind of pricey to buy Windows and the Windows version of UT. I've already got the Mac version and it IS a Universal app.

Other than the sound problem, it really does run a lot better on my new iMac. I've turned every setting up as high as it will go and I haven't had a single hitch in frame rates, even on the biggest ONS maps.

I will try the ini files first, then reinstall if that doesn't fix it.

PS: any idea why MA3 is down?

Re: Sound problems

Bah a security update with an auto restart was installed. It's back now.

Do the intel macs suffer from the long load times as the other macs do? That would be the main reason to think about boot camp. Also there hasn't been a word on 2k7 going mac yet.

Re: Sound problems

Well, my load times are a lot shorter than they were on my PB. I don't what you consider long. It usually takes about 5-8 seconds to load Torlan when I'm playing multiplayer for instance. Is that long or short? On my PB it was at least three or four times that long.

Oh, let 'em release 2K7 first smile Altho it does add to the frightning possibility that mac games will slowly disapear because of bootcamp sad

Re: Sound problems

Big budget, hardware intensive AAA titles on OSX do seem to be an endangered species. Can anyone remember the last one announced? Any since Bootcamp?.. I can't think of any.

I think the porting houses are waiting to see how things shake out before committing to any new ones.

Before Bootcamp, I'd've bet money (well, a little) MacSoft would announce Halo 2 for Mac. Then came the "on Vista" angle with its technology complications, then Bootcamp.

Not taking any bets like that now.

Re: Sound problems

Starting with fresh ini files didn't fix it. I guess I'll have to try to reinstall.

I don't know what the problem is. I just did a complete reinstall and I still have the exact problem.

Then it's time to start messing with the various settings in the audio tab. I'd start with safe mode and everything unchecked. Work up from there or go the other way to everything to the max and work down. Anyhow the default settings are not happy with your Mac.

I think the audio in 2k4 is just flakey. I can't run HW+EAX becuase I lose all VOIP comms. A bug many have reported but Epic can't reproduce the problem.

Re: Sound problems

I can't find anything called safe mode in the audio settings. Is that a PC version only item?

The Audio Mode drop down menu doesn't have a safe mode. confused Hmmm maybe a PC thing.

I've got: Safe Mode, 3D Audio, HW & HW+EAX

No, all I've got is OpenAL. There aren't any other choices.

Re: Sound problems

FWIW, I'm having the exact same issue with voices on UT2004 (3369.2) and my Core Duo iMac.  The kicker is that voices work fine if I run the game before patching it up to 3369.2; of course, the game is otherwise miserable as it's a PowerPC binary.  The voices also work under the UT2004 demo (3334; PowerPC only).  So, my question is: what gives?  :-)

I suggest both of you post the bug to Ryan.

I was thinking of trying that too, but I really didn't want to run it under Rosetta. I was wondering if something in the update might be the problem.

I tried forcing UT 3369.2 to open using Rosetta. The voices work fine, but frame rates are awful as I expected. Going back to native and voices don't work again. It also fixes the key bind problem I'm having. No responses from anyone on bugzilla about our bug reports.

Re: Sound problems

Did you find a fix to this issue? I'm having the same problems with my sound / key binds.

My Mac:
MacPro
Two 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" processors
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 2G memory

Last UT2004 Patch Installed: macpatch3369-2

Thanks for any suggestions / help

Nope I never did. I just checked bugzilla and there hasn't been any responses to our reports either.

Re: Sound problems

Yeah, I'm starting to have the feeling that 2k4 is done in terms of support. Epic is busy with 2k7 and GoW. More and more I hear 'run it in bootcamp' as the fix.

I hit Epic's forums everyday and Ryan's site once a month. All the news is on new stuff. Too bad there hasn't been news on MacSoft picking up UT2K7. Good news is 2K7 will scream in a Quad MacPro under bootcamp. Bad news is many still have great Dual or Quad G5s.

I'd smurf an Apple with a bite taken out of it on the spot if my dual 1.8 ghz G5 loaded ONS-Torlan that fast. That is very short and fast.

Also OpenAL is the only audio choice for UT2004 on the Mac, and yes it is buggy and not very well implemented. Definitely not the first time it has been messing up, but if Gordon has anything to do with it, he should patch it up good if another patch ever comes out.

Pretty sure all you can do is wait for that said patch. :/

Re: Sound problems

Hi. I'm having the same problem as described above.
Mac Book Pro, patch3369.2, no voices. Everything else seems to be working ok.
