Edited to add: while i'm for anything that's good for the magazine, i DO prefer MacAddict.
I prefer MacAddict too. And I really wouldn't want to see the forum name change at all.
I subscribe to 3 magazines: Airstream Life, Nebraska Life (a sub from my mom but I still enjoy it), and MacAddict. I was clearing out old magazines last weekend, and though how weird it would be if MacAddict was called MacLife instead. Bad Omen. Is it too last to change your minds?

I just had an uneasy feeling about this change. It comes from Riks comment "but we wanted to get all our personnel ducks in a row". Is this change a reorganization? A takeover? Merger?I really am hoping for the best, especially with a bigger and better magazine, but something tells me this is a lot more than just a name change.

Chill.
All I meant is that we wanted to have the new editor in chief on board before we went public. We're close to anouncing this Exceptionally Talented Human Being, but a couple more tweaks need to be tweaked before we can do so.
Stay tuned.

God, I hope not.
Changing the abbreviation from MAF to MLF... we would get a LOT of misguided people!
I thought the exact same thing!

No prob -- we've been in contact with those good folks, and all is well. MacLife.com will be ours when we launch our new mag next year.
Oh, and -- of course -- the Forums will be coming over to MacLife.com as well; why would we ever want to inconvenience any members of this loyal, committed, articulate band?

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?
Interesting.
Since issue 4 of MacAddict (the first one I saw on the magazine racks) I went from being an enthusiastic 'buy every issue' supporter to a moderate 'buy every now and then if there's something good on the cover' supporter to the nostalgic 'looks at the cover, doesn't get interested and moves on' person.
I'll have a look at the new magazine, and buy the first couple to see how they go. A change in direction is long overdue, but welcome nonetheless.
Good luck to the brave new MacLife team.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?
I agree the mag needs a change. I haven't bought an issue in a long time. And I'm neutral on whether or not the name MacAddict stays or goes. But I have to add my name to the ranks of those who think MacLife is about as uninspiring a name as one could imagine. I genuinely hope that it doesn't reflect the content of the magazine in either tone or topic.

so, does this mean the magazine has ceased publication for the time being?
if so, what about the contests? will they be honoured?
will the cd be replaced by a dvd?
what will be the publication frequency?

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?
The name MacLife is not for me but it may be for the future Mac masses that are moving to the platform. They do not see themselves as rebels but as castaways who were found by a stable ship when the MS Titanic started to care more about limits than usability.
Hopefully the meaning of what it is to be a Mac user will not be lost in this turning of the tides. Sometimes it is good to be a little addicted, a little weird and maybe a little crazy.

Calling all loyal Mac Addicts! I now have an online petition to stop the name change up and running. Together we can fight to keep the magazine's name (and its humor) just the way it is! Once I get a decent number of signatures I will send it to Future Network US and MacAddict (or Mac|Life, I guess).
Sign it: http://www.petitiononline.com/macaddic
Note: It is posted as "macaddic" due to an 8-letter name restriction.

rip up the petition. rik got fired and the mag is changing it's name. It was long in the tooth and time for a change... but I will guarantee you one thing, it will not survive after the change! It will take the same trip TechTV did when it was taken over!
I know it doesn't sound nice but that's it....

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?
I remember when MacAddict came out with Issue #1. I remember being a huge Mac fan and when I got the first issue, it was great! The articles on why a Mac was better than the PC, the attitude, the irreverance as it was put, was so perfectly needed in that point of the Apple life cycle. So were the subsequent two years' worth in their continuation of/look at the world of macaddicts.
I remember one article done in...issue 7 I believe?...that was a two-pager done about a group of Mac users who all lived together and had a house all designed around/integrated with their Macs. That was a great article, and I loved the look at how people used Macs in the day.
I have mixed feelings about the changes being made to Our Beloved Magazine™. On the one hand, given the past two or three years' worth of magazine time, it's really stopped being all about the Mac Addict and the fun tone that it had once had. Let's face it. Mac Addict "grew up"...or maybe it just went through enough hands that the people who made the magazine what it was moved on and the people taking over took it in a new direction. Either way, some of the spunk that made Mac Addict different has definitely ebbed over the years. You look at the editorials and the reviews now, and the staff and writers make an attempt to keep the flavor alive, but it's apparent that they're just going through the motions. They try to make jokes, but most of the time they get overlooked or lost in the almost canned routine of the magazine. And, Speaking of, Reviews are great and all, but do they have to make up, along with advertising, over half of the magazine? We have maybe one or two articles and then a ton of reviews.
This transition could be a good thing, too. A Mac enthusiast's magazine that is retooled completely into something new could be a good thing, especially if they cover a lot more of the spectrum of the interests of the readership. For example, I don't just want to see Photoshop tips and tricks. I'd like to see more about digital imaging and the Mac. What kinds of products make for a good digital workflow? What're some good ways to set up a Macintosh digital hub in such a way that it's also a part of our entertainment experience, not just an addition?
However, here's the problem as I see it: How does MacAddict/MacLife prevent itself from becoming the next MacWorld? No offense to MacWorld, but there was a point at which MacWorld became too much like reading Time to be interesting. Sure they reviewed stuff and all, but they had absolutely no personality going in the magazine.
MacAddict, I hope and pray that you guys don't go the way of MacWorld with this. I hope, instead, the magazine grows up to be more like an adult version of the MacAddict of Yore. With plenty of technical knowhow and good writing along with a taste of attitude and pride. Don't just go all professional on us and get boring, but give us something that really makes us WANT to read the magazine. Don't let down some of your loyal readers.

You guys are just embarrassed that I mispronounced "MacAddict" when I jumped on TWiT during the MWSF '06 broadcast.
Don't worry, you won't have to worry about random free plugs from me anymore. Not if I'd be spouting something as lame as "MacLife".
Remember when MacWorld bought MacUser and essentially acquired nothing out of it other than raping the competition and acquiring the "Mouse" rating (that's now been done away with) and Andy Ihnatko (whose been gone for even longer)? Yeah, I'm as horrified now as I was in the late 90s. Hurrah!
I'm going to go back to my bathroom mirror so and practice the phonetic pronunciation of "Clubhouse fifty-four" so that I don't smurf it up in January. Because that's obviously why this happened.
Gah.

I'll say this much... I still post here, but I don't subscribe anymore.
I hope the new rebranding goes well. (just make sure to redirect the forum URL for a few months).
