Hear here. This is scary business. I've just recently managed to fix myself a twoyear subscription on MacAddict and this is the way I find out that I'm going to get MacLife instead? Damn, if any name was witty it was MacAddict (ie addicted to Mac for life) while MacLife(a life around Macs) feels more plain like toast without marmalade. What's going to happen with Max. Is he and the smilies finally going to buy it?

I really hope you're not becomming a version of MacWorld.

What will the new moniker for the forums be? Well if it can't continue being MAF I still suggest you make it pronouncable. Something like MaLiF, MaLf or MALF as a link back to the origin.

eek

Hm. After rereading Riks post on the matter I feel a little tiny bit more positive that I did right after I'd just eyed thru it and written the above. You have my blessing but I still hope that you don't retire Max, the Max-smilies and the MaxAttac forum-theme completely when changing MacAddict to MacLife. I'll be here as a subscriber for the following two years (until november 2008) so I really hope it will be worth the change.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

MacAddict - the name and the mag- has attitude. MacWorld we all know is the main Mac mag for regular , long time Mac users but is now a mag for photographers and iPod accessory lovers.  All those other mags such as Mac Home, Mac User, iCreate have gone. MacFormat in UK keeps reinventing itself and is now so bad they couldn't be bothered to renew my subscription. There was a Digital Life but soon that also disappeared (in Asia at least) as it was trying to be everything digital but nothing of substance. That left MacAddict being the only voice of geeky Mac users targetting an irresponsible bunch of young Mac heads. Mac Life sounds so middle aged. It will cover everything - or try to. Will we be seeing extended wi-fi with  cans (or something similar) again? Or hacking into OSX just for the heck of it - or to lose one's Apple warranty? If we do, I'll renew my subscription. If not then I'll stick with the Internet for my Mac reading. Good luck MacAddict writers-- I have enjoyed every issue. I am a Macaddict but I do not lead a Mac Life.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

I, for one, think we could use a little MacWorld in our MacAddict. Just a little, mind you. MacAddict is amusing and entertaining but pretty much devoid of useful information for anyone who has used a Mac more than a year or so. MacWorld is chock full of informative articles, but it's never as entertaining to read as MacAddict. So, I don't subscribe to either one anymore. I'm extremely eager to see what y'all will come up with!

...but I also feel that the name MacLife is not a promising start. hmm

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

I'm also more in favor of the name MacAddict over MacLife.  Not because I'm used to it, but because if I was a first time user browsing my bookstore's magazine rack for a Mac magazine, I'd certainly be more likely to pick up the one called MacAddict before the one called MacLife.  But, maybe that's just me, and I don't think we get a vote in the matter.

Like they say, change is inevitable, so I can only hope that the upcoming changes will be mostly positive in the long run.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

I'm probably atypical this way, but the last thing I need is "useful information" in a Mac magazine. The more a mag tries to be "useful" the more likely it is that there are whole issues with nary a story I care about. Like, I just don't do digital photography -- it's just not something I'm into. So a big cover story about cameras, or a "scanner showdown" (I do not need to buy a new scanner that often), or a 6 page review of high-priced imaging apps that I can't afford, just isn't going to get me to pick up the magazine. But a mag full of witty commentary and projects that are fun, funny, and probably useless (like the iBorg), is going to find a place on the back of my toilet. Basically, I'd like a Might Magazine equivalent for Mac users. MacAddict was close to this once upon a time, but somewhere along the way it became more ho-hum. The name MacLife seems to promise yet more ho-humness, but I'll reserve judgement until I've read the first issue.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

As long as MA keeps the humor, more 'usefulness' is okay. I personally prefer a web subscription type, like nytimes.com. But why change the name? MacLife is too generic. Besides, MacAddict is already well known.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

The content is more important than a name change, but I don't see changing it to MacLife as a move back toward the irreverence that has been missed in recent years.

Since no one else has said it, let me be the first:
This smacks of middle of the roadish conservatism to me, in the name of sales. Will WalMart and certain other stores not stock a magazine with the words 'Addict' in it's flag? Is there a concern that 'decent minded' people won't subscribe to a magazine with the word Addict displayed so prominently? Sounds like a couple of suits and bean counters got together and decided the general public desires something more bland and 'safe' looking.

Something that won't raise the Terror Alert Level above yellow.

Yellow. Now there's a word with interesting conotations.

We're still MacAddicts, but MacAddicts aren't a large enough group to sell magazines to anymore. Now we've got all those iPod users, too.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

I agree that Mac Life is a really boring name for a mag. If you're trying to catch somebody's eye on a mag rack why would you go with a plain-jane name like that? I can't believe anybody really believes this new title will be more eye-catching for that audience. It certainly doesn't convey to me the idea that this "new" mag will be a better read than the old name did.

I've been a subscriber since issue 1. I haven't kept all the mags, just the past 2 years worth, because I ran out of space in my office. I do still have every CD, complete with the nice cardboard envelopes (until they stopped using them anyway). It doesn't expire until 2008. I will reserve judgement until I see a few issues, but if the new mag suxors as bad as the new name, I'm gone.

Just how in hell changing the name from MacAddict to MacLife will spark interest in 'those iPod users'?

Not only that, the switchers might not want to purchase a magazine called MacAddicts.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

It's not just a name change. What if they shot at the other 99% of the Mac user group, those with iPods, everyone with a new MacBook, instead of us experts. They could shine a bit of the Apple light on this crowd and win them over. Apple, after all, is a cool company. A few facts, history of Apple, coupled with some vanilla articles about how to X Y Z your new Mac will win them this crowd.

The mantra of 'advanced technical journal' is held by MacWorld. MacAddict's user base, the Apple liberation crowd, is now marginalized by the hordes of new Mac users. Who will move in and grab the delicious newbies? Looks like Rik wants to give it a shot.

I read this post out loud in the living room. I took a poll on what range your postcount was. 5 out of 6 people said "under 10".

Charles said it was your first post, and that you just registered today.

I've been a MacAddict reader since the late 90's, and I was bummed when I first heard the news.  But after reading Rik's posts, I feel better.  I'm looking forward to a magazine that has more and hopefully cool stuff.  I'm looking forward to Maclife!

I know what you're saying.  I still remember that first MacAddict issue - it was so cool, and it had this swagger that included the name "MacAddict".  Change is tough!  But if they're successful in the transition, (and especially if it makes the magazine better), I know we'll all be happy!smile

well, at least I can lay claim with the rest of the l337 charter subscribers that we went the whole run. Even when MA got crappy.

I'll look at one or two MacLife (gag) issues and see if it'll be worth reading.

And since I'm not reading all that long bullsmurf in previous posts, does this change also include the elimination of The Disc?
