Does anyone still use MS Explorer with OSX?
Does anyone still use Explorer with OSX? I know Explorer was discontinued and is old now, but I personally know some people who still use it - how many are still holding out? Do websites behave badly in OSX Explorer in general now?
I am currently building a website and it has severe problems in OSX Explorer - I'm wondering how much I should concern myself with fixing it. I would expect many viewers to the site to be using OSX.
Thanks

Re: Does anyone still use MS Explorer with OSX?
Speaking for myself more or less no. I still keep it around for the occasional site testing task and little or nothing else.
Oh and in your shoes, I'd be trying to fix the site anyway but that's just me.
This site may or may not help in that end if that what you decide.

I wouldn't waste time thinking about it, I don't know of anyone who uses it. Maybe some old people who haven't upgraded anything in years...
But is that the focus of your website anyway?

It's still installed on some of the Macs at my college. Occasionally I see people using it, and I recommend that they use Safari instead.

you could always use a browser check and if IE 5 then they get a "Use a modern browser or DIE" message

Agreed. Do a browser check and warn people that the site may not display properly in IE 5.

I keep it around for 1 reason: saving whole web site archives (I like doing this with tutotials, etc. for offline reading). I'm told you can do this in safari, but I've never seen it.

Yeah, I'm inclined to fix it and I guess I knew I would, but I was looking for excuses not to. I've already started working on it this morning, and it's driving me nuts that I am changing the structure of the pages (but not the layout/position of objects) yet IE 5.2 keeps displaying them exactly as it was yesterday. I have emptied caches and history.

Is there a way to read a web archive in a program other than Safari?

There is a valid point to that, although my experience lately has been that if a site needs IE, it probably needs IE 5.5, and so the OSX IE is poop anyways.
Speaking from a business point of view, considering the bad rap IE gets from everyone, and the numbers of people who have switched to mozilla-based browsers, having a site only function in IE is ridiculous (Ford and GM Canada, take a bow).

Maybe once ever 6 months, for really pesky websites that don't display properly in Safari or Firefox. There aren't may left that have problems in Firefox, but I keep IE around just in case.

My version of Safari (1.3.2 v 312.6) does not have that option. And I don't get any more free upgrades, apparently.

IE 5.x for the Mac used a completely different rendering engine than its Windows counterpart did.

With that in mind I was hoping my problems were isolated, but I just had a friend test the site on his winXP machine - the same problem existed for him - poop!

Is your friend using IE 6? :shudders: Maybe you can post the problems at WD&D (a few blocks from here) so the folks right there can help you (don't think they read this forum much).

My friend is what I call a "basic computer user" - he doesn't know which browser he uses, nor how to find that information. We did the testing over the phone.
Right now my access to windows machines for testing is severely limited so I am currently focusing on getting this to work in IE 5.2.3 for OSX. About a half hour ago I surprised myself with a solution - an inelegant solution, but it works in all browsers I have.

I am older than the hills around here and yes I have upgraded practically everything.
But there are many sites that only play nice with IE; they even say so, "this site best viewed with IE."
Those messages are most likely referring to the Windows version of IE, and a recent version at that. If you are having trouble viewing websites in Safari, try Camino or Firefox.
