Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

The first Apple I used was a //e.  I still remember playing Hard Hat Mack like it was yesterday.  It wasn't until the mid-90's when my grade-school finally ditched Apple II's in favor of 486 PCs.  Anyhoo, to clarify, I meant "n00b to MacAddict."  I was just recalling how I prematurely judged the proverbial book by it's cover.

The first Apple I used was a IIc, when IIc's were brand new and the smurf, so-Ya.

Weren't we still pounding sentences out on rocks then?

Close... the first computer I ever used was a TI-99 in 1st grade. Thank god they got some //e boxes soon.

Who said anything about your post counts being zeroed out?  That sounds like a lousy idea to me -- I'll do what I can to make sure it doesn't happen.

I mentioned it off-hand. Like other moronic posts in here, it's taking the minute details of what's being said  in order to make a snarky jab rather than stepping back 10 years and having a look at the big picture.

Thanks Rik, but like fido said I was just joking about the postcounts, I'm more of a lurker than a poster so it doesn't matter to me. Actually I'm not really worried about the mag, you guys certainly aren't idiots, you wouldn't do anything that would kill the mag, so I plan on being concerned when I read MacLife and say to myself "Damn, the new mag really sucks!", till then I'm just waiting to see how it goes. Anyway,I'll be looking forward to seeing how the new mag turns out, just keep up the good work and I'm sure everythiong will be fine big_smile

i'd be happy if mac|life merged the editorial content of mac format and icreate. i could save $26 a month then.
somehow the british mac magazines are light years ahead of the homegrown product.

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

I am concerned about the continued dilution of the Mac Addict Spirit.

The first few years of MacAddict were FANTASTIC. Mac Addict with Cheryl England brought a new and aggressive dynamic to computer magazines. An amazing irreverence packed punch of POW! Since her era, MA has never been the same.

I have to admit, that although I still read every MA issue, it's not with the same enthusiasm that one was. Maybe it's me....

In my eyes, the current Mac ADdict product ratings have become really horrid & untrustworthy. A rating of 3 out of 5 "Solid" really means that the product is not worth buying- it has serious flaws which are usually briefly mentioned in the review text.  More evidence of the demise of the free press and more kowtowing to advertiser dollars at the expense of honesty to the MA subscribers. I feel that the TRUTH is more important. If I'm going to read a review, it's very important that I can trust the review to have MY best interesting in mind, not next month's advertising income. This kind of pandering plus the lack of depth is why I stopped reading the MacAddict product reviews. Oh, that and buying a few "Solid" products that really sucked. So don't lie to me to protect guilty advertisers. Don't even try to mislead me. Just tell me the truth about a product. I'll find out anyway, and the only 2 things that will suffer is my wallet and your credibility.

I feel that the new name of MacLife is bland, and in complete opposition to what MacAddict stood for. In order to have something really great, you can't be concerned with trying to please everyone. You don't see The Motley Fool getting worried that their name isn't modern enough, or grownup enough.

And come on. This is not a name change. It's a Magazine change.
I can only hope that the reinvented Mac magazine will have spirit & spunk, full of wild creativity, not be afraid of the advertisers or stockholders, while being informative, entertaining, and edgy. I need a Mac magazine that will say the things that other publications are afraid to say. How to void my warranty, how to hack the Finder, how to break the rules, how to do expensive things for cheap.

If you're looking for an example of a great publication for do it yourself projects, check out MAKE magazine. They are really rocking! http://makezine.com/magazine/  Yeah, something like a mashup between the original MacAddict of yore plus Make, with a heavy dose of nofear, honesty, and that wild feeling you get riding a motorcycle home from the Mac store, racing a tornado.

Best hopes for a bright future
(but expecting a blander one)
Dave

I read this post out loud in the living room. I took a poll on what range your postcount was. 5 out of 6 people said "under 10".

Charles said it was your first post, and that you just registered today.

Proof that this is all entirely for the next wave of people who have no clue what OpenDoc was, but buy computers 'cuz they're pretty.

I've been a mac user for quite some time now and I just finished interning at MacAddict over the summer... I don't really understand where you're getting this idea that I'm this "new wave" or just get computers "'cuz they're pretty."

I registered and made this post because I really love this staff and I wanted them to know I'm totally behind them, and I think that everybody should be as well. It's simple and short, just like the registration and first post of an account.

Think these things over before you say stuff like this, alright?

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

I'll read the first few issues, as my subscription ends next December.  If it vastly improves the content and spirit of the mag then I'll keep it even if I think the new title sucks.  If it is just the same old stuff, I'm out.  The mag has become a Macworld clone and I dropped Macworld long ago.  I don't need to know about Photoshop, Shake, Bryce, etc as I am not in video or print.  I want a mag that was like the original Macaddicts.  I want to know how to hack my computers beyond their stated potential.  I want expert hacks for the operating system and programs.  I want tips and advice on internet apps and searches.  Sadly, Macaddict no longer provides this on a regular basis for me.  I don't hate Macaddict for changing, its just that I don't need what you are providing.  I am not a new user, and most of your mag is now devoted to those people.  If I want Mac news, I can get it online the day something is announced.  I have to wait at least a month or more for you to have anything in your mag due to the delay involved in printing and publishing a mag.

Its been a swell ten years, but I fear I will be bidding a fond farewell in the next year.  sad

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

Just FYI, the only reason I still get MacWorld is because they won't cancel my subscription. Every time my "last issue" shows up, I say Thank Goodness, but then I get another and another and another. I don't know what the deal is, but if MA is looking at MW and seeing that MW has a lot more subscribers, it could be because of these weird practices. Oh, and the only reason I started getting MW in the first place is because I got it as a "free gift" (redundant!) for buying a Mac. And I see offers for free issues of MW all over the place (like, whenever I can pick a mag as a "free gift" for buying something or joining something, MW is always on the list). MacAddict isn't nearly as aggressive at getting issues into people's hands.

So true - I was ridiculed earlier, but it just isn't worth it to take personally.  I'm still excited at how the magazine could improve further, and that was the point of my post yesterday.  I think constructive ideas and comments are appreciated too!

Re: MacAddict changing name to MacLife?

My friends snicker when they see me reading a magazine called "MacAddict" because they think i'm a Mac freak already, and having a magazine with that title only confirms it. So, I agree that changing the name will help bring it a broader appeal, so people don't feel weird to pick one up and read it.

I do wonder though what is going to happen to macaddict.com, and the forums, and will my MacAddict subscription automatically carry over?

I have to disagree with the name change. MacAddict has an edginess to it. There's some attitude within the name. MacLife may be bigger and thicker and meatier, but it just sounds flaccid.
