Re: Fun with - ion generators....
i just picked up 2 35,000 V .005uf caps from the goldmine
and proceeded to shock the crap out of myself...... but it was fun. i also crashed my ups and my mouse with the -ion discharges... oops... guess i'll be moving my experiments into the other room

i dunno. i was looking through other parts of that site. looks obviously hokey.

Re: Fun with - ion generators....
more fun to use a flyback from a TV. then an r/c stick for acceleration.
you can send about 150-175kv off the end with that puppy..
hell of alot more fun than a simple van degraff with no moving parts.
more like a jedi light saber

it could work... consider how a wire feed welder works... since that "ion gun" needs high voltage, low amperage electricity, a conductive fluid (probably a variation on saltwater) could act as both the wire and the compressed gas for a negative ion discharge that is released when it strikes a grounded item, such as a human.
edit.:
i ended up[ buying a kit for a similar device:: see my more recent posts below:
it works, emitting high charges, but as for it working from 20 feet, probably not unless the air was really dry... its great for charging up one side of a piece of glass or plastic, with a friend against the other side. if someone then touches both sides, they get a nice shock... even hours later.

Conductive fluid? Are you sure you are looking at the ion gun?

oops.. i was looking at the phasor.
hmm... interesting multiplier circuit

Yeah, I know. Powerful stuff there.
So, you ever seen anything like this? I might make it a project for next summer.

get a cheap negative ion generator..(i got mine from electric goldmine for $12) hook it up to a power source. take a compact fluorescent bulb and lay the contacts for the -ion generator over the contacts for the bulb... it will glow a little.. let it fill with negative ions for about 3 sec-10 min.. longer is better. find someone who isnt prone to heart attacks, and doesnt have a pacemaker, and holding onto the glass part of the light, touch the contacts to said person (test it on yourself first)... its best if said person is grounded (standing in socks on a hard floor, not a carpet) the light will light up, and they will get a nice shock (about 10-75KV, depending on "charging" time and how grounded they are)... repeat as needed.
you could also build a van degraff generator that wasn't dependent on the air being dry to work. another fun thing to do is to hook up about 50 feet of speaker wire to the - ion contacts and charge items in the house that wont discharge quickly (mirrors, metal bowls, etc)
Oh, I got a great one like this. Find someone, and kick them in the balls. It's just as stupid, and doesn't require any extra equipment or prep time.

Re: Fun with - ion generators....
heh.. i got a van de graff generator from american science and surplus... now i need a faraday cage or something, cause i keep knocking out both ups backups in the house every time i turn it on. but the ionic wind it creates is awesome ... 8 inch sparks from the sphere to my arm.. all the hair on my arm stands straight up before the spark hits. I'm going to try to convert it from using wire brushes to strip electrons to using the negative ion generator as the source... i would show pics. but if the ionic wind can knock out the ups 2 floors up, i don't want to have my camera anywhere near it while its running.

Re: Fun with - ion generators....
ok, finally got around to taking some more pics of the high voltage generators. right now, i have the - ion generator hooked up to a homemade cap and some film high voltage caps. all the caps are hooked up in parallel with alligator wires. each side of the cap bank is hooked up to a 4 foot long florescent tube, with one side connected with alligator wire and the other side hooked up with a 50 foot coil of cheap coaxial cable. when the voltage builds up, the large tube will light up for a few milli-seconds, like a large triggerless strobe. the tube flickers even when not connected to the caps, due to the high voltage wind radiating from the cap bank.
the home made cap consists of a 1 gallon glass jar filled 3/4 of the way with saltwater with a 5 inch long carbon electrode in the water and a 1/8 inch thick layer of mineral oil on the surface of the water to suppress corona. the carbon rod is connected to the "lid" of the jar with an alligator clip. the rod does not touch any of the walls, nor does it breach the mineral oil, it is suspended completely in saltwater. the clip is connected to a brass ball 1/4 of an inch in diameter that is bolted through the lid. the lid consists of the top of a 25 dvd spindle with holes drilled in it to allow 2 brass balls to be placed to create a spark gap with the other caps. the outside of the jar is coated with tinfoil and metal tape, which is then wrapped in electrical tape and finally with duct tape. the bottom of the jar is only coated with foil, no tape, so that it can act as the other contact for the cap. it sits on a piece of aluminum foil and metal tape, which is semi-grounded by the wood table it is sitting on.
so hopefully that explains the pictures well enough btw, i have been shocked by the caps and it hurts a lot more than just the hv generator or just the cf bulb(which is also hooked up, but it doesnt do much but flash and prevent the caps from rupturing). also, i still cant show pictures of the van de graff machine while it is running, due to the intense (20 foot) high voltage wind that radiates from it. but i did take a pic while it was off.
so here's the pics and a short movie of the tube flashing.
oh and before anyone says it, this is not a zombie, but rather a continuation of a thread i started a while ago. i don't see why we need multiple threads on one subject in this case, as it is a hobby of mine and it gets done in my spare time (which isn't all that much, thats why the updates are few and far between)
