Hastert Will Step Down
Exclusive: The Speaker bows out of the Republican leadership after Democrats take his power. The contest to succeed him will help define the Republican Party in a new era of divided government.

They didn't force it.

Sure they did.  They shellacked Republicans in an election that was a referendum on Rumsfeld's mismanagement at the Pentagon.

The American people forced him out, certainly.

I'm sure Bush's fellow Republicans are very happy about the fact that Rummy's leaving now, instead of six months or a year ago.

Re: Rummy steps down!

Everyone see how that reporter got bush to admit he lied last week when asked if he would have Rum step down. bush admitted that he purposely said that Rum would not step down, would carry out his last two years, knowing full well he was not going to.

Remember that thread regarding bushy's good qualities. I remember one of them being he was honest, although this response got a lot of these roll roll roll

I'm guessing the GOP isn't exactly thrilled with the President today.

He's stated before the primaries were over that if he ran as an independent, he would identify with dems in Washington. He is a democrat. He will be listed as a democrat in the Senate (as he is now).

So it's going to be just hugs and kisses all around?

How do you know how Joe's going to be listed in the Senate?

He's stated he is going to the Democrat caucus. Back in 2000 when a republican switched sides - guess what happened. He was no longer listed as republican, he was listed as democrat. Not only that, but majority power changed, etc.

He's going to join with the democrat caucus - and they (dems) would be stupid to not let him, as every seat counts - not just for now, but for 2008 as well. Yes, the dems will be extremely supportive of him.

Sure, like I said, Joe's going to blackmail the Democrats by threatening to actually switch to the Republicans.

from the other thread: And rumsfeld just got voted out.  I wonder if he's exiting to avoid having to testify under oath.

Other thought: I wonder if Bush will offer the job to Lieberman, flipping the senate to the republicans again.

a) I don't see how this excuses Rums from any potential testimony -- quite the opposite, in fact, I think he'll be less able to dodge it.

b) I don't think Joe would accept the Pentagon gig. Nor would he be a wise choice politically, since he's been a stay-the-course kind of guy.

No he's not.
Joe has no interest in becoming a republican. He is a democrat and he is proud to be one.

Naw, on FreeRepublic they were bemoaning a return to Bush41 "realists" and that it was a win for the Islamofascists.

Re: Rummy steps down!

I still can't understand why Bush didn't accept Rummy's resignation way back when.

I have a buddy whose brother is Brass in the Pentagon, who believes that ever since Rummy offered resignation, Cheney has been acting as Secretary of Defense. Keeping Rummy around would facilitate doing this.

Sounds pretty plausible to me.

Bingo. And I believe his term expires early next year. Imagine the humiliation of trying to get him confirmed.

By the way, Robert Gates as new SecDef ... what do we think about that?

Personally I wonder what was so freaking great about papa Bush's administration that produces so many freaking officials in the present administration?

Quite a few of his team came from the Nixon and Ford administrations.

That would be great.  Personally, the best I can do basically approximates and Amish beard.  I tried the handlebar thing once, but it was an abject failure.
