Niko? A question for you...
In issue #90 (Feb 2004) you reviewed a videoconverter called the Pyro A/V Link. Do you have any idea if this thing plays nice with Tiger?
It's this one in case you need a reminder.

I'm not Niko, but as a general rule, those things are platform-independent.

I thought so too but since I'll have it delivered a long way I really want to be sure that I get something that I actually can use. I guess that if it wouldn't work with the Mac I could allways use it in VPC.

Re: Niko? A question for you...
I have one (an older version) and it plays nice with tiger, for importing, but the version I have never worked very good for playback. I am sure they worked the problems out by now.
By the way, I didn't read the review.
There is a newer version available at ADS Tech http://www.adstech.com/products/API-557 … PI-557-EFS for only a few dollars more.

Since it's the same req's on the new one as on the old one and it doesn't seem to be a change in included software I guess they've just changed the look of the device to something that's easier put integrate in a pile of other square boxes. How do you mean that yours didn't work well for playback? Please explain

Re: Niko? A question for you...
Hmm, the site I linked to has three pictures on it the top one is different, but the other two look the same as the one you linked to. I wonder if the different model numbers reflect a change in the internal electronics, or just different production runs.
Now, as to a further explanation, Imovie gives the option to play back through camera, when I select that and try to play video through the AV link to my TV it the video doesn't play very smooth. It frequently plays at less then one frame per second, or it just stops then looses connection. If I use the export to camera, (as if exporting to VHS) Imovie reports that the connection to camera was lost, and export fails. I hope this makes more sense.
Having said all that, you inspired me to try something different; I hooked my digital video camera to my AV link using firewire, from there to my TV. I then played a tape in video camera, and the played properly on the TV. Go figure.
Now, I would like to know, if there is any particular reason you are interested in this particular AV capture device; considering the many devices to choose from. Do you intend to export captured video to VHS tape?
I hope this helps.

Well the short answer is NO. What I hope to be able to do is to import material from VHS tapes to the computer and burn that to DVD's. Some of the material I have, photage from theaterplays, might need some editing on the audio (clearing it up) so I hope I'll be able to use iMovie for that or maybee iDVD.

Re: Niko? A question for you...
Hey!
As others have said, that box should work peachily with Tiger. If I recall, it didn't come with any Mac-compatible software anyway - iMovie, iDVD, and/or QuickTime Pro should handle it for you as they did for me.
If you plan on editing long clips, it might be worth your while to invest in a beefier app, like Final Cut Express, or chop you footage into short (10 minute) chunks for editing, then join them back together after editing. Unless you're particularly fond of that spinning beachball...

Re: Niko? A question for you...
i got this:
http://elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetv250
just for the same reason, and to play my dreamcast on my mac, and i love it. it does a really great job, and make very nice imovie hd projects (as long as imovie isn't open when its done converting the project to imovie). plus then you get to watch and record tv.

Re: Niko? A question for you...
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything, but too late now. When I bought mine I had ben planing to use it and my computer like a PVR; thinking the video out ports would alow me to easily watch recorded programs on my regualar TV, but that didn't work.
Thanks for clarifing your plans for the converter. For a clearer explaination, yes the video capture function of this device works with Imovie and Tiger. Personaly I don't use mine anymore, if I want to import a VHS tape I use my digital video camera.
Having said that, I probably wouldn't buy it just to import video with so many other devices that cost less.
Sorry for the confusion.

Not to get too far off topic, but have you ever tried to use it to just import audio with it? I am looking for a better way to get both audio and video or just audio into my computer, preferably with one device. (I have a stack of vinal LPs and a bunch of VHS tapes I want to digitise.)
