new CDROM in old PB1400?

I've got on old pb1400 that runs well but I'd like to change the system (it's got a Japanese system at the moment.)

One problem is that the cdrom drive is kaputt.

I'm sure there are ways to get around this using pc cards with big compact flash cards etc but really, the machine will be much happier if it has a cdrom drive that works.

So, until or instead of locating one on the auctions, what do you think the chances are I can open up the cdrom unit, take out the old one and replace it with a new(er) one. The newer one being any typical notebook cdrom drive off the auctions, maybe in the 12x-16x speed range... (assuming anything faster will be wasted on a slow procesor)

make sense? drop in a generic cdrom drive instead of tracking down a used and flacky old apple replacement unit.

cheers.

btw i've heard it's possible to fix old units by twisting laser alignment screws until they back in place. anyone tried this?

Re: new CDROM in old PB1400?

Depends.

If you have the 6x or 8x CD-ROM module, you're pretty much out of luck. If you have the 12x model, you are very much in luck. You can replace the mechanism with a TEAC 24x one, which can be had for next to nothing on eBay.

You want the TEAC CD-224E drive mechanism.

Re: new CDROM in old PB1400?

btw anyone know the model no. for a pb1400 cdrom drive.
Found one on ebay, photo looks like a match but the seller doesn't know what kind of machine it's from. Just a "powerbook."

But it's notched like a pb1400 module. 3400's appear straight I believe. Phot not enough to go on but at least the guy knows the model no.

Model # M3628
