Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
I thought component cables were going to be in certain stores by like the first week in December or something....

Perhaps, but if you want them now, you need to order online or via phone:

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
Two of my friends and I made the 1.5 hour trip yesterday morning to the nearest retailer with any in stock - Wal Mart. We (and one other guy) went in to the store only to find that they weren't open for business even though the doors were open. Silly thing to do on a console launch date! They kicked us out but gave us numbers so the four of us were served first even though a bunch of kids outran us from the main entrance to the electronics department. We didn't hang around after we bought ours but they had 27 units and there were probably 50 people so they mustv'e sold out. Only waited about 45 minutes.

My brother-in-law and my nephew waited outside Walmart all night to get theirs on Saturday/Sunday night/morning. My wife and I though just picked one up today at a Game Stop, no wait necessary.

Wow, you just got one today?
That's pretty surprising. Maybe they got an unusual number or more than the presales they allowed?

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
Huh? They actually had some left?
Oh, I checked out Costco and they don't seem to have any in my area. I think I'm just going to wait for online purchases (beside the ripoff known as ebay) and get one that way.

I guess wii lucked out. We were on our way back from a job we were doing together, and my wife got the number for a GameStop that was nearby, they said that they had just gotten a shipment in which they were unpacking. We walked in, told them we would like one, we got it. It is pretty cool.

Sweet.
It sounds like video game specialty stores get shipments on a daily basis.

It seems like I also read somewhere (in this thread?) that Gamestop/EB Games might be holding back their inventory until black friday. That's a rather depressing thought as I really don't want to stake out the mall at 5am on friday.

Some of those complaints are a bit silly (the "nunchuck" can't actually be used as a nunchuck? You really don't get any "exercise" out of using it?) and at least some of his complaints regarding imprecise controls appear to be from unfinished products such as Metroid.
I have no personal experience as of yet though, so I can't personally comment. I haven't seen such complaints in the video game online press reviews, however.

No. Well, the pointer takes getting used to, but once you get it down, it's cake.
I love it.

If I can find a standalone game store in St. Louis I might try it. I really don't want to risk being trampled at the mall.

It's true that light flicks will make Wii Sports work, but clearly this guys needs to remove the "FPS are teh rox0r" stick that's shoved up his butt.
And Metroid's controls got a big overhaul. Calling Metroid simply a "sci-fi title" tells me all I need to know.

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
So what's the deal with the gamecube and classic controllers? Neither one works with every game (like there will be wii games that require the classic controller but won't work with the GC controller, while the classic controller doesn't work with every classic game but the GC controller does)?

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
Nintendo isn't very clear on the GameCube/classic controller issue for Virtual Console games either.
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/system … controller
Controller Requirements for Virtual Console Games
Virtual Console games available for download on the Wii Shop Channel span many different home console systems, and are published by many different companies. Because each console and game can have their own unique controller needs, it is important to understand what the controller requirements are before downloading a game.

Indeed. Reading the article made me cringe a bit. Honestly, I don't know what to think about the Wii right now. I think I really need to heed Nintendo's "playing = believing" mantra.

I've been hearing contradictory things all over the place. I honestly think that if anyone actually does know what is going on it will be impossible to tell.

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
Whenever you buy something from the virtual console it has little icons to denote what works and what doesn't as far as controllers go. So far everything can be handled by a GameCube controller (with a couple that also work with just the remote), but you may get a little message about "this is optimized for Classic Controller" but it doesn't stop you from playing.

Okay, but what about the as-of-yet unreleased wii games that won't make use of the wiimote (ie Smash Bros.)? Will they only work with the classic controller?

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
Hmm. I wouldn't count on it. Masahiro Sakurai had a Weekly Famitsu Column talking about his new development team for Brawl. According to this translation,
But we still didn't have enough people. To create a game like Super Smash Bros. Melee, I would want a team with a minimum of 50 people. Getting together that many people would be a back-breaking task.
So it was that Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto introduced me to a "particular team" that had just completed a large-scale game.
Until the day comes when I can announce the team's name, I shall simply refer to them as "The Studio."
"Let's do it. Let's definitely do it!"
The words of The Studio's executive were very simple.
I was surprised when I saw the GameCube controllers they were using. The coating on the analog stick was worn down like an old eraser...
"Our guys have played Smash Bros. more than 10,000 times!"
It had to be a lie.
But when I saw their battle records, it showed a terrible number of matches that were not fabricated.
This was the result of years of uninterrupted playing of Smash Bros. during lunch breaks. There are often cases where your team doesn't understand the content of the game you're making, but that wouldn't be a concern this time.
It was promising.
This had to have been fate.
So, with the members of The Studio as our core, we dramatically increased our staff members.
I mean, if the development team used those GameCube controllers that much, it would be very surprising to see them forgo the GC controller and require a Classic controller.

I'm a bit curious about FPSs and the Wiimote. So far CoD 3 and Redsteel seem to be pulling in fairly mediocre reviews.
Perhaps I'll get to play an in-store demo this week.

Re: Wii stake out - when are you heading into line?
From all the reviews I've read:
Graphics: Red Steel > CoD 3
Controls: CoD 3 >> Red Steel
All hope now lies on Metroid Prime 3.
