Oh please. There are plenty of Jews in Congress. They don't have to swear on a book they don't believe in, do they?

How is it that anybody, anywhere, ever listens to a man so incredibly stupid? Its really quite remarkable.

When I was sworn in to the Army, and took my commision, I did not do so upon a bible, or any religious tome. I was asked to raise my right hand, and repeat the oath of office. Must have been official, I got paid for it.

Even a layman can read the constitution and know that there is no case and no court needed to decide anything here. Might be nice though to put idiots like these in jail for criminal stupidity. Better yet, make it a capital offense.

"Under God" in the Pledge sucks, too, but I think the whole idea of a "pledge" sucks even harder.

So if a Pastafarian takes office, does s/he swear on a plate of linguini?

I see this type of remark quite alot the last few years and it makes me wonder. Has our materialism lead us to such a poverty stricken world view that we have come to believe no one believes anything anymore?

Is it really materialism?

A frequent liberal critique of the Soviet Union used to be that their scientific output was filtered by an ideological bias-- as if the establishment first checked whether the scientist was a good communist, and whether the experimental results were consistent with Marxist thought. (I relieved much boredom wandering the stacks of my college library, so please forgive me if the argument seems shallow.) It seems to me that a materialist would be concerned fist and foremost with the results themselves, and not any imaginary ideological defects that might have biased these results.
