As opposed to my expected degree, which I guess means "Just Deep."

Congrats! I just defended last May. It's quite a relief, isn't it?

Now all you have to worry about (if you're going into academics) is tenure and promotion. And whiny students.

Been there; done that. Multiplied by 25 years. What's next? Retirement. Though I will admit, I've never worried about it all that much.

Congratulations!

Re: I finished my Ph.D.

Many thanks for the kind words… and congrats, too, to the other recent or soon-to-be graduates (adam, Vegas, and freecat!).

The degree is in music education. The dissertation was about correlations between and among rehearsal achievement, teaching effectiveness, and students' pre-existing musical skills. It was sort of inspired by the "no child left behind" (and earlier) notion of holding teachers accountable for student achievement. Lots of statistics.

The degree should have some beneficial effect on pay, though a small percentage increase on a modest amount is still a modest amount. (This is higher ed, after all.) It's certainly necessary for tenure.

Most academic doctorates are 'Doctor of Philosophy' degrees.

In medieval times, any research outside the fields of theology, mathematics, medicine or law was called "philosophy", hence the Ph.D. degree covers a wide range of subjects. Contemporary Ph.D. degrees are awarded in nearly every field of the sciences and the humanities.

And my "drivel" comment was all in jest. I love this board.http://members.cox.net/registered_user/maxes/love2.gif
