As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
I'm pretty sure I've seen forum posts here about people complaining that Firefox doesn't have as-you-type spell checking. Earlier today, I found a development version of SpellBound, the current spell check extension for Firefox, that has it:

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
Such spell checking will be built-in to the Mozilla core with Gecko 1.8, and this will also appear in Camino as a result.

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
If it wood get the grammar nazis off of my back - yes.
The "check as you type" spell checking in Evolution is great - I use it all the time.
It would be great to have a *working* extension as part of firefox (all of them so far have been buggy).
I want it to use my system aspell disctionary though, not a mozilla provided dictionary. If I have added a word while spell checking on the command line, I want my browser spell checker to know about it.

Spelling and grammar are different things.

Of course they are - but it's the grammar nazis that go after spelling.

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
The link I posted so far is working for me on both Linux and Mac OS X with Firefox 1.5.0.1. Though on Linux the US English dictionary didn't seem to be included (like the linked webpage says it is supposed to be, and was when I installed on OS X), but after installing it from http://dictionaries.mozdev.org it worked fine.
I also use spell as you type in Evolution on my Linux box at work, and on Thunderbird at home, but miss it in Outlook (also at work, using Citrix and Terminal Services).
Didn't know that Gecko 1.8 will have it built in, I haven't been paying much attention to the roadmaps. Great to hear.

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
Well, rereading the post thread the Linux dictionary problem was probably because I installed the extension as a user, not root.
Also I have just discovered that getting the menu for corrections doesn't work on OS X. It's supposed to be control-left click, but since on OS X that is equivalent to a right-click, it doesn't work. If you're willing to modify the extension's code, there's a hack to change it to use alt (option?)-left click instead. I'm about to try it. It's on the second reply on this page of the thread:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic … ;start=135
EDIT:
Following the directions worked, I now get the correction list with option-left click. Since his directions are a little vague, here's how I did it:
1. Open Terminal.
2. $ cd ~/Library/Applicaiton\ Support/Firefox/Profiles/default.vl1/extensions/spellbound@exchangecode/chrome
3. $ unzip spellbound.jar
4. Now you'll have three folders: content, locale, and skin. In the folder content is a file called inlineSpellCheck.js. Open that file using whatever text editor you like. I used TextWrangler. Find the function onClickHandler which starts on line 265. Specifically, change line 268 from aEvent.ctrlKey to aEvent.altKey. Now save the file. Throw away the original spellbound.jar (or just move it somewhere safe), then go back to Terminal.
5. $ jar c content local skin > spellbound.jar
6. Delete the content, locale, and skin folders.
7. Restart Firefox, and then go to a web form (like the MacAddict post form
), type something misspelled, and then option-click to get the suggestions.

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
Supposedly Firefox 2.0 has this feature built in as standard. It would be nice if it worked.

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
Can't they just hook into OS X's already handy spell as you type feature?

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
I'm using FF 2.x and it has "check as I hunt and peck" spell checking. I have no idea when it appeared but it is here now.

Re: As-You-Type Spell Checking for Firefox
Yep, FF 2.0 has spell check, very rudimentary spell check. I like FF and the new spell check is certainly better than nothing but..OMG...the FF spell check can be laugh out loud off base and useless sometimes. Frequently the suggested "spellings" are so far off the mark you just have to wonder how they came up at all.
I hate to say it but the FF spell check lib has got to be the worst one I have ever seen.
