Gears of War

GoW seems to be the new hit.  Do we want to start a clan and have a separate forum?

Re: Gears of War

As much as I wanna say hells yes. I'm not wholly sure we have enough peeps. If we could combine CH54 & MA peeps then maybe. Honestly a [MA]XBL and [MA]Wii might serve better or [MA]Console to lump all consoles under one roof. Then the question of Halo 3 will come around too this year. Honestly in my heart of heart I kinda wanna rename the [MA]UT2Kn to [MA]Epic or [MA]UnrealTech as a catch all for Epic games since they're all based on the same tech. Much of the troubleshooting you use on one can be carried over to another. AA, RB:6 and UT2K4 all had the same troubleshooting ideas behind them.

EDIT
Also Bat and I have a GoW thread going in Xan's pub & Grill. Since the forum change I'm not sure who has the privies to see it.

So let's go get the CH54 peeps. wink

Hmmm, separate forums for each console might work too.

Re: Gears of War

I'm liking the idea of a [MA] Console.  I just don't think we have the numbers to justify a GoW or even Live/Xbox forum.  Console would put all of them together, Live (most likely mainly GoW and H2) as well as Wii.

You underestimate the number of Halo nuts we have. If GoW didn't get them to purchase a 360. Halo 3 might be the final push off the fence.

Re: Gears of War

I do indeed realize the number of Halo fanatics, I am one of them.  Back in the glory days of [MA] Halo and the MA H2 clan, I was on night after night blasting away on the MA server of Halo: CE, and was one of the most prominent members of the Live clan.  I just think that to give xbox our own forum may be being wasteful.  At the same time, a Console forum would take away much of the stuff that is posted in Games, though I think there would be plenty to fill both postions.  Yeah, Halo 3 will be huge, but keep in mind that we already have MA Halo, which is used for both Mac and Xbox versions.  I'm still going for [MA] Console if anything.

Re: Gears of War

Needs a li'l more time and thought. Something subsuming GoW for sure, but not splintering our limited numbers and/or breaking up existing clans. Halo may have a substantial rejuve with H2V, there's H3 on 360 and maybe not too far along on Vista (both good Bootcamp candidates). Hmm... needs more thought all right.

Sound like good oppos. I've missed the last couple weeks, but a few practice sessions and I'll be back to my old 'blind-fragging PuddleMonkey' form. smile

Us v. Them = enough. I see they've already started ponying up the $10 for 'CH54' gamertag changes.

Re: Gears of War

Sorry but Kirk ain't gettin' GoW.  My wife is already unhappy about the monthly WoW subscription fee (regardless of it not affecting our finances).  Buying a console for another game so I can spend even less time with the wife unit would not go over well. wink

Those wife units can be so unreasonable. http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/rainy.gif http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/shakefist.gif

(So it's waiting on the Intel Mac, Bootcamp and GoW PC, UT3, H2V et al? big_smile)

Meanwhile, since WoW obviously needs to be more addicting...

AFTER "CONQUERING" THE world of cooling, Zalman execs decided that the company cannot live from cold air alone and has started to diversify its product line-up into the world of computer cases, headphones and now - 3D monitors.

This technology has been knocking around for years, and now Zalman decided to come onboard and launched two models, a 19-inch one with regular 1280x1024 resolution and a 22-inch widescreen version, boasting a 1680x1050 resolution.

The 3D effect was really impressive in HD video, but the real deal is for all those Warcraft players out there, since WoW finally looks different and more immersive here. We haven't been able to find out the pricing, but the guy on the showfloor told us the 22 incher will not be priced at $1000 like several competitors we saw at GDC, but will be more affordable.

In other related Zalman news, gamers out there can start cheering, since we hear that engineers are working on a successor to the first 5.1 surround headphones, launched all the way back in 2004, and that the new and vastly improved headphones will launch at Computex Taipei 2007, if all things go according to plan. They should appear on the market between end of June and mid-July. µ

Re: Gears of War

FiringSquad sez

You just knew they would do it but you just didn't know when. Now we know that developer Epic Games and publisher Micorosoft will release a port of their multi-million selling Xbox 360 third person shooter Gears of War for the PC platform (or the Games For Windows platform as Microsoft now labels it).

During a Microsoft E3 press event last night we got to play some multiplayer matches in one of the new exclusive PC levels that will be included with the new version of Gears of War. The industrial looking level (lots of rusty looking pipes and such) was perfectly made for this game with lots of cover points that exploit Gears of War cover fire mentality when it comes to multiplayer shooters. There will be about four or five new multiplayer levels in the game along with a new single player/co-op mini-campaign. As you might have read last night one mission will have you facing the huge monster brute that was featured in lots of the pre-release trailers for the game but was never actually fought by the player itself in the Xbox 360 version.

The game looked pretty fantastic in the high-res glory of 1900x1200 screen size for the PC demo. The game's art and textures will be tweaked to make the PC port truly take advantage of a high end PC set-up. While the version we got to play was based on DirectX9 you can also expect a Vista/DirectX10 version as well. While PC players will not be able to play against their Xbox 360 counter-parts, the PC version of Gears of War will have some new achievements to unlock. Finally the full Unreal Engine 3 mod tools will be provided for folks itching to make new Gears of War mods.

Sweeney says UE3 is plenty scalable, too, tho I woudn't expect light sys reqs with good framerates. Teh pr3tty is droolworthy, tho, up to 1920x1200:

Re: Gears of War

A few quick notes...

Games for Windows- Live, the fledgling PC counterpart to XBox Live, is expanding, as this and one other recently announced title show, from being Vista-only to also running on XP. DirectX 10 is still and likely to remain Vista-only, but some coming GFWL titles will have lesser, DX9 fallback modes, including GoW PC. Unfortunately this currently precludes running these under Parallels, as Parallels 3.0 DX support only goes up to DX8.1. At least GFWL networking etc. is proving after all to be XP-compatible as some of us suspected, so Boot Camp on XP should run such titles. (Hopefully it's not too late for an XP patch for Halo 2, which only needs DX9 and, again, seems to have no valid reason to be Vista-only). Anyhoo there's been a shakeup in the program and GFWL has a new top man. Short interview at ExtremeTech:

At E3 2007 today, we met with Kevin Unangst, the global director of Games for Windows, and Chris Early, the new general manager for Games for Windows Live. Though they didn't go into specifics regarding Microsoft's plans for the future of the PC as a gaming platform, they did share some news and gave us a few insights into where it's headed.

The biggest news for many of you is the announcement that GFW Live, currently Vista-only, will be headed to Windows XP. This was actually sort-of announced in the MS press conference on Tuesday night, when Cliff Blezinski announced that the PC version of Gears of War, which uses GFW Live, will be available on Windows XP as well as Vista. It sort of went unnoticed, but we have confirmed that indeed, GFW Live will hit XP this year. Although Early and Unangst were quick to point out that Vista has sold over 40 million copies and they figure 10 million of those are core gamers, they recognize that XP still has a huge installed base and will continue to for some time. Don't expect DirectX 10 to come to XP, though.

Gears will be, if anything, better on the PC than it is on the 360. It will include all the 360 content, including the downloadable content, in addition to five new single-player chapters, a new multiplayer mode, and new achievements. It will not be playable online between Xbox 360 and PC gamers. The PC version's new content might be part of the reason, but also, the 360 game was designed and developed without cross-platform play in mind.

We asked Early which are his biggest priorities for taking Live forward on the PC. There is still much to be done—many 360 features aren't on the PC, including Live Arcade and Marketplace. He said that Marketplace is coming and it's a priority, but the second most important thing on their plate right now is breaking the Live experience out of the games. You should be connected to Live and able to send and receive messages, game invites, and so forth without having to be inside a Live-enabled PC game, and they're hard at work to make that happen. Their first priority, though, is to "make sure it all works." Bringing Live to XP is apparently not as trivial as it would seem, and MS needs to make sure everyone has a good experience with it. No timeframe was given for when we can expect Live to be available on our desktops, nor for when the Marketplace will show up—we were only told that they were very important steps to bringing Live on the PC on par with the Xbox 360. Continued...
