Since I'm not going to read 7 pages of posts again. tongue I'll just post this. Did anybody read Daring Fireball's comment about Apple using  a ARM chip for there iPhones?

A quote from the site:

"Sources familiar with the matter (as they say) hinted to me that the iPhone is powered by an ARM processor. This in itself is intriguing, as it is an entirely new chip architecture that Apple’s operating system1 is now apparently targeting.2

Also interesting is the fact that Apple isn’t publicly admitting that they’re using ARM chips. One reason, perhaps, might be that Apple doesn’t want to draw attention to the fact that they once owned a significant stake in ARM and sold it all at the end of the ’90s."

More here.

Re: iPhone

So, if you want to browse the web on this thing, does it ask you whether you want to use your cellular data connection or local wi-fi?  Or is it smart enough to just use wi-fi if it's available?  Because I honestly wouldn't use the cellular internet very much because of cost.  But I could see it being fun to look something up online quickly when I'm sitting in my living room, rather than going upstairs and starting up my Mac.  Mainly, I'm going to use it for calls and music.  I kinda wish they would have a stripped-down version that was just a basic phone + iPod.

On a side note, we don't have a Cingular store where I live, and their online coverage map shows me squarely in "partner network".  I called Cingular, and they said that it would not cause any problems for me to use their service consistently in a parter network area.  No extra charges or loss of services or anything.  I thought I might be screwed out of this phone, but maybe not...

I had a Nokia E61 (the nonbranded, more feature-rich predecessor to the E62 that was briefly noted in the keynote) this summer, and it had Wifi. I did not have a data plan with T-Mobile at the time, so the Wifi connection was great! I could check something on the internet from anywhere with a Wifi connection just as if I had my laptop out. This meant at home I could browse the web if I wanted from the kitchen table, or in class or at work when I didn't have my computer with me I could check something out. It is very useful.

One big drawback to the way that the connection works on the Nokia E61 (as is with most smartphones I've used that have Wifi) is every time you connect to a Wifi you haven't connected to before, you have to create a little temporary "Access Point" profile for it, which is time-consuming when you really want quick internet access.

But yeah, the Wifi on a phone concept is great.

Re: iPhone

Okay, so the iPhone is great, and I really want one, but one of the many things I need to know is...

I keep hearing people saying things like... "Well yes the iPhone is going to be expensive, but even though you are paying 500-600 clams for it, dont forget that this includes the 2 year agreement with Cingular, so at least you don't pay for services for the first 2 years."

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this completely wrong?  The price of the iPhone won't include free cingular service for 2 years will it?  My perception is that this only means, the price of the iPhone is based on you agreeing and paying separately to set up a contract through Cingular.  If you dont set up this service with it, then to buy the phone will either be not available, or it will be much higher than $500-600.

Maybe since Apple/Cingular hasn't announced available iPhone plans yet, that maybe it is too soon to know for sure...but what do you all think about this?

If 2 years of cingular were included in the iPhone price, this would be an amazing deal, but I doubt it.

I am pretty sure that you still ahve to pay a monthly charge to use the "phone".  If I had to harbor a guess, that charge will be somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty bucks per month.

Re: iPhone

I already have a Cingular account, which ironically, At&t is disbanding the Cingular name all together during the next few months. I would imagine I should be able to pop my SIM in and go.  Although I will have to pay extra for the web surfing and messaging.

Although if you surf through a WiFi, I fail to see how Cingular can charge extra for that. If they do then that sucks.

BTW my contract is about $45 a month, and includes 1000 minutes no matter where I am in the country.

The assumption is that you already have cell phone service, so the monthly fee from Cingular instead of who you arleady have (or if you already have Cingular), is not going to affect you, yet you're getting a discount on the phone vs. buying it seperately.

Re: iPhone

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone

Infogear originally filed for the U.S. trademark "I Phone" on September 3, 1993, and later applied for "iPhone" on March 20, 1996. Both trademarks have been registered in the United States since 1999. Cisco Systems obtained the iPhone trademarks after its acquisition of Infogear in 2000. The term has been used on the (Infogear) iPhone since 1997 and (Linksys) iPhone was launched in 2006. Cisco's trademarks cover "communications terminals comprising computer hardware and software providing integrated telephone, data communications and personal computer functions" (1993 filing) and "computer hardware and software for providing integrated telephone communication with computerized global information networks" (1996 filing).
Cisco representatives stated on January 9, 2007, that their company and Apple had been in negotiations regarding the trademark and expected to reach an agreement about the name shortly, according to documents received by Apple's lawyers the night before the Macworld keynote event. Cisco has since announced they are suing Apple over the infringement of the trademark iPhone, seeking an injunction in federal court to prohibit Apple from using the name.
A separate U.S. trademark application for "iPhone" was filed on September 26, 2006, by a heretofore unknown entity named Ocean Telecom Services LLC, covering "handheld and mobile devices". The application claims a priority date of March 27, 2006 based on a trademark filing in Trinidad and Tobago, serial number 37060.[16] Apple had previously filed under its own name for the "iPhone" trademark in Australia, claiming the same priority date and using the same Trinidad and Tobago application, indicating that, in all likelihood, Ocean Telecom is a front company for Apple.

Apple has made filings in various countries outside the U.S., including Australia, where a separate iPhone trademark was filed in 2002 and registered in 2005. It is presently unclear whether Cisco owns any rights to "iPhone" elsewhere.

It has a memory slot doesn't it? The battery would really make the form factor a bit larger. At 5 hours, there is more than plenty for a Phone anyway.

Considering my blackberry has talk time around the 80 minute mark, I'm loving the idea of 300 minutes.

It depends on the plan that you have. I would imagine that the iPhone would require some sort of data plan, and those generally run more then an average phone plan that caters to calls and an SMS from time to time.

In all honestly, I would be surprised to see a $50 - $75 a month plan.

I'd rather that wasn't the case, but I wouldn't be surprised

Ya, but those are 300 Apple minutes. So that probably means you'll hit 300 if you unplug a brand new phone, dial out, and make one 300 minute call.

Personally, I'm more curious about standby time. If that sucks this phone is a deal breaker for travel.

Re: iPhone

Well, it has a total sleep mode. The screen is totally off. The only time it wakes up is if a call is coming in. It probably only beeps if an SMS comes in and it's in sleep. It certainly doesn't light up like a Christmas tree like my ROKR.

Honestly, if you are on the mobile for 4-5 hours during a normal work day, battery time is the least of your worries.

When Steve has it on the screen at the keynote, the price was huge, and the words "2 year contract" were very small.  If the service was included, those text sizes would have been reversed.

Apart from that, 4-5 hours a day isn't healthy from just the emissions from it and do you really need to be that in touch with other people? I can understand if you are making business calls and such, but 5 hours of "Hey, where are you, oh cool, catch ya." is probably not really mentally healthy. It's the whole Clueless thing.

Re: iPhone

It does not have a memory slot, what looks like a memory slot on the side is actually a volume control.

A lot of people are ditching land lines in favor of cell phones, me included.  Do you think it is a good idea to sell a phone where you have to send it somewhere for a new battery?  This alone could make it fail big time.  I travel a lot and if the battery acts up (remember this is essentially my only phone, even when I am home) all I want to do is go buy a new one and replace it.
