How does this work?
http://break.com/index/how_to_boost_wir … ignal.html
So the guy wraps an eithernet cable around the cellphone then plugs it in the back of the computer... But where else are you going to plug it besides the ethernet card?
Most wireless cards don't have an ethernet jack... So how does this work?

Re: How does this work?
That would be really handy for me if it works. Sometimes at hotels with wifi, my TiBook can't pick up a signal, or a decent signal. One time I had to go outside on the balcony, but as soon as I went back in the room, the signal dropped to almost nothing. Even at home I only get 3 bars when I'm 30 ft from my base station.
The guy mentions 802.11g, but there is no reason it wouldn't help an 802.11b card is there?
It is odd that just wrapping a cable arund the phone then plugging it into the ethernet jack improves the wireless signal. They don't seem related at all.

Computers never do what you want them to do; only what you tell them to do.

The above method is different from that of which is on the site you posted.
But I've already figured out how it works... It's actually pretty funny when you figure it out for yourself.
Im not good at explaining things so ill let the others explain it...

Reminds me what a friend of mine did once...he hooked his rabbit ears to his stereo up to 2 150yd spools of copper wire, and strung the wire all over his room (it hurt the eyes kinda bad). Occasionally he'd pick up broadcasts from Mexico City... we live in Iowa.
There are 3 types of people in this world.
Those that make things happen.
Those that watch things happen.
Those that ask, "What the f*** just happened?"

I once made a cylindrical parabolic reflector and it boosted wi-fi reception quite a bit.

Re: How does this work?
regardless if coiling wires helps or if a parabolic reflector helps ...
coiling a cell phone with an ethernet cable and plugging it into an ethernet port (which the video implies will do nothing and it sure as hell wont show up as a device.
maybe if the phone had bluetooth then it might show up but it has nothing to to with the ethernet cable and sure as hell wont find any APs

I suppose you could use a Pringles can, but I used sheet aluminum for mine. The plans can be found here (This design is much simpler than the typical "cantenna"). I was thinking about using his plans to make a dish parabola, but that would've been extraordinarily difficult.

That's because they are not.
I hope for the sake of humanity though that no one though for a split second this was real.

He's got a bunch of other videos up too. Search Youtube for this one and you'll see some related ones. He does a good job of faking this stuff.

MacAddict made one out of a Pringles can once. Ah the nostalgia.
