Xterm? X11? SSH -X? $Display variable? Man....

I've had nothing but problems with this.

I want to be able to log into our Sun machines and run some software that tunnels to a window server (I'm sorry if my terminology is off on this one). ssh -X and -Y both give me the:

'TK initialization failed: no display name and no $DISPLAY environmental variable.'

I've read online of people using xterm, but I'm a little unsure of what/how/where this is. Is it included with the X11 package? I downloaded X11 from the Apple site, but it will not install, insisting that I have a newer version installed already with Tiger. The X11 icon in my utilities folder opens and closes the app really fast. I don't know if this loads some background process or if it's just teasing me.

I guess what I'm asking is for a little advice getting this going. I don't have any problem running this on my Ubuntu machine and I'm fairly certain my Macbook should be able to do this without me boot-camping into Windows and running cygwin or something.

Nevermind, I'm surrounded by some pretty smart individuals who could solve the problem.

If anyone has this problem in the future:

Reinstall X11User from the Tiger CD.
It's in System/Installation/Packages

Then launch X11 from utilities

Then you're good to go.
