I just said its possible, when dual booted windows has direct read/write access the drive as a whole, if some type of malware gets administrator privileges in windows it is certainly possible that it could exploit that read/write access, it knows that there is a partition there and it can do what it wishes with it, i don't know of any software out there now that would damage it, because like i said, thats not what they want, but there is plenty of stuff out there that will open up an IRC server and your computer will use that to give attackers admin access to your computer, the attacker can then reformat the "Unknown Partition" for their own use, or download an HFS+ driver onto your computer and start messing with files

i don't think its something that is likely to happen, but there are a lot of different types of malware out there, and many will just hand over control to some guy on an IRC server and let them do anything, and you don't know what someone will do once they start snooping around in your computer, its easy for them to see that your installed on a 30GB partition but have a 120GB drive, it looks like your hiding something, and thats a good enough reason for them to find out what needs to be done to read the drive (or just get pissed at you because they can't figure it out and zero all your data away)

fair enough, i suppose it is a bit possible, just as your sig says...

Jasoco, tell your dad that the price for computer support on the Mac is much less than that for Windows. Oh, and don't forget to hand him the bill for that support next time you are called upon to troubleshoot.

I'm not a young woman either.

Ha. That didn't work. I have the whole back and forth email conversation. That Compaq PC almost tore my dad and I apart. Seriously. It got so intense. I started with a longwinded letter begging him not to get it telling him he will regret it. He shot back as if I had insulted him. I shot back, he shot back, I responded and he realized that I really like my computer and didn't appreciate the Mac bashing "jokes" he says all the time, he apologized and bought it anyway.

Christmas morning we set it up and it refused to boot requiring a reformat and restoration right out of the box. I looked at him and saw the heartbreak on his face when he realized what he had done. Sure, he finally realized it was a mistake, but I didn't want him to find out this way. The computer worked for a year before every part of it died off one at a time leaving only the monitor working in the end. I got what I wanted. Him to realize that PC's aren't always what you want them to be. But I really didn't want him to realize it that way. It hurts me to this day remembering that face. sad

Currently my brother uses my old iMac G4 as the Compaq is long gone, and my sister uses my old iBook since her custom built no name PC we got at a Computer Show died a year ago despite repeated reformats and virus software installations by the most Windows/PC knowledgeable friend my Dad has. (Also known as the biggest Windows zealot on the planet. Thinks Apple is still the Apple of 1983.)

If you have an HDTV, you can (probably, depending on the tv) connect a mini to it and use the tv as a monitor or watch downloaded video or DVDs
Besides, if you buy an hp, your gonna hate it, 'specally after youve used a mac for some time. Just the difference in quality of construction and components will make you kick yourself.
Don't let a couple hundred dollars price difference throw you off the Mac. If a BMW cost only $1000 more than a Ford, which would you choose?

So you will be the primary user of the machine, and he is going to lay down the law and make you jump through hoops?  Sounds like you don't need us - just tell him the way it's going to be.

Have you ever used Macs before?  If not, a distinct disadvantage of the Mac will be leanring a new system, especially if you are running a business.  Once you learn it, most Mac users think it is superior to anything else going.  In hindsight, you will find that the "learning time" to get up to speed on OS X will be made up for 10x a week with the easier operation over time of a Mac.

Re: Need "pros" list for mac mini

Sounds like if I want to run windows without chancing my mac, I should invest in an external drive for the Windows side of things.  I may give that some consideration as well.

Czachorski: I have used a mac my whole life.  The only time I've ever spent on windows was at work.  My computer of choice has always been a mac.
You guys are right.  I use the computer most often, and for more important things.  The one and only reason I don't have total control over which computer we get is money.  I'm a housewife so hubby earns the big bucks.  I just do work on the side for my dad and stuff.  Not enough to save for a computer within the next year. That is, unless business takes off.

My wife and I had the same debate, but about washers.  Ours died after 10 year.  It was a cheapie but worked fine.  I wanted to replace it with another cheapie.  She wanted a front loading high-capacity washer that was 3x more expensive.

She made her case pretty well:  she does most all of the laundry, not me.  Our kids are young and we are at the peak point in our lives with laundry load, so she rejected my notion of buy cheap now, and get a nice one later - she says she won't need the nice one as much later when the kids are gone.  All good points.  What could I say?  We got her choice.

The same logic worked for me in reverse 5 years ago, when I wanted to get my first Mac.  Lay it out well for him, and how can he say no, regardless of who "makes" the money!
