You're trying to discredit a real issue by throwing a blanket "tin foil hat" type thing over it.  That's reverse FUD.  EVERYTHING IS FINE, PLEASE IGNORE THIS ISSUE.  MICROSOFT IS GRAND.

I'd be more worried about a virus taking advantage of this.

Wow, I leave you guys alone for 5 minutes and look what happens to the place wink  Anyway, on to the show:

I think Apple should somehow advertise that their OS does NOT have a kill switch in it (ie Activation).

I'm probably not getting a Dell laptop specifically because of so called "product activation", and I doubt I'm alone...it's just that 99% of people don't understand the issue. If they did, how many people would trust their life to a system that can be locked up by installing a buggy piece of software, or if Microsoft changes terms, etc.?

Related info: I had been posting questions about this issue for a few weeks. With XP, a computer that shipped with the OS installed from a big OEM (ie Dell) could have the OS reinstalled WITHOUT activation. But since Vista's "activation" has gotten even nastier, I didn't trust that it was the same.

I finally ended up posting in Microsoft's forum for Vista activation questions...and got my post deleted as being "off topic".

Since then I've caught other posters who have purchased laptops with Vista, have tried to reinstall, and have needed to activate. (In one case, he couldn't even do it over the internet-had to use the phone, and had to do it about once a week.)

Microsoft seems to be deleted posts like that regularly.

Anyway, Apple has a HUGE advantage here IMO, and should somehow, in simple terms get the word out...

They did that when they introduced Leopard in the Keynote, they were poking fun at Vista)
Typo.

Fear. Uncertainty. Doubt.
Someone should make an acronym for that that we can use on internet forums.

Seems more like:
Fear. Uncertainty. (BSO)Death.

I like that the Google search for "Vista activation" immediately brings up several software cracks to bypass it.

It just wouldn't be the internet without that. That's one of the few useful uses of the internet. tongue

Just so you aware - I'm one of those penguin types.
Yup - Linux all the way. No Mac OS - No Windows.
And yes - it is tin foil hat stuff.

Microsoft sure did some sleazy things to get to the top.
Denying legitimate users the right to boot if they don't agree to a new EULA was not one of them - and they would not be at the top if they did.

Such a move would be suicide, and no doubt result in a complete change in the board of directors, as MS is a publicly traded company - pissing off the entire stock market would not be a good thing.
