And thousands of subscribers left without a refund or anything... I love Mac|Life and will be subscribing. I think it was time for a much needed change. Give the magazine a few issues and see if you like it, don't make a harsh judgment on the first issue, ppl. Geez!

You are right. I don't work in the magazine industry but with the low prices they charge for subscriptions vs. the cost of printing and shipping I would think that the subscriptions aren't a direct source of income at all. Instead, it seems to me that the subscriptions are simply a means to allow them to charge more money for advertising. In other words, if they have 1,000,000 subscribers they can charge the advertisers a lot more than if they only have 500,000 subscribers.

Re: Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here

Was the Publisher for MacAddict, always Future US, Inc. ?

What was wrong with offering Mac|Life for new subscriptions, and still offer MacAddict magazine with it's subscribers.

I'll bet, it's all about MacAddict and the monthly CD, that Future US wanted to do away with. And only have to offer on-line downloads instead of a CD.

I think they should of named the new rag, MacAddict|Life and offered it in a reader poll, for any name change.

The new Mac|Life, is really slick looking, almost Madison Avenue slick, but then it's only San Francisco, slick ! The MacAddict had class of it's own, the new people on staff did not see.
I'll miss the MacAddict and the CD's each month, I renewed for two years, and even had a gift subscription sent too, don't count on me next time.wink

1) Yes, Future was the publisher.
2) Yeeeeaaaahhhh, make two magazines. Did you not notice that the same people that were making MacAddict are making the new mag, along with a few new people? Do you really think it would be that easy to make two magazines every month with the same resources or are you trying to make a point in some way that you don't think people would have subscribed to the new mag if they had a choice between it and MacAddict? Over the short term perhaps but Mac|Life would surpass MacAddict over the long term anyway.
3) I'll bet the decision had nothing to do with the CDs. They could have simply extended current MacAddict subscriptions if they wanted to get rid of the CD.
4) Reader Poll for selecting the new name??? Have you seen some of the posts in here? There would have been some wild choices.

Same company, but it's been through a couple of name changes. When MacAddict was first launched (Sep/96), the company was named Imagine Publishing.  Sometime in the early 00's (forgive my flagging memory), it was changed to Future Network USA (our parent company, in the UK, is named Future); more recently, that was streamlined to Future US. Clear as mud, eh?

Easy: If the current staff had to create two mags a month, their heads would explode.  Hmmm.. Roman has a pretty big head; I don't want to be around when it goes off.

Nope.  That was waaaaaay down the list of reasons to change -- and besides, we're now $5.99 on the newsstand, so the CD-producing cost is offset by the lower price.

Not to diss anyone here -- and I really mean that -- but there's something to be said for letting people who have a specific area of expertise take care of matters in that area of expertise.  After all, look what letting an amateur like Dubya take charge of an army has resulted in.  (Sorry, couldn't resist...)

All I can say is give us a chance -- and if you don't like Mac|Life after a few issues .. well ... it's a free country (currently, at least wink ).

I was trying to come up with a good way to put that in my response. Your analogy is spot on! LMAO.

Is it only me that think this is strange. Unless Future Inc. has been changed completely as the magazine changed its name, one would think that the tools for distribution would be the same as they where for MacAddict. Also this isn't the first issue in a new period but rather the second issue. I payed my subscription some time in oktober or november and I got my MacAddict for december and january right on time so why the heck doesn't this work for Mac|Life??? confused

Are old subscribers suddenly less important...confusedsad

Re: Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here

MacAddict's style was and will always be a fond memory as it pertained to my ever-evolving computing experience.  Those of us from Rik's era have been down this path of publishing change before and we eventually came through it un-scarred in the long run.  I'm talking about watching mags like Apple InCider/A+ , Nibble, GS + , ][Alive, MacUser, etc... come & go.  While we watched at in horror as the things we held near and dear to our hearts seemingly go away, we moved onward to find still something else to get involved in with this ever changing and refreshing love of computers in our lives.  Do I miss my Apple][, Laser 128EX, ][GS, Amiga 1000, LC III, Centris, 7500, Beige G3 Tower?  Sometimes it's fun to think about those days, but I've learned to move on and try new and different things. And no matter how hard I try to stay on top of the latest things to come along, it seems like a never ending learning curve.  But, I'll get by!

I truely hope that not ALL of the irreverence will leave Mac|Life, else it become a stogy MacWorld clone.  I too will miss the cd (no dsl in my area) but if I really just gotta have something, I'll get it from my friends who do have faster speeds.  However, the staff videos were a hoot! (It's A Wonderful Mac) was a true classic and I shall miss them.

So, bring it on Mac|Life... I'll be here waiting to check you out.

P.S. - don't make the pages too glossy, the glare can be aggravating.  Best Wishes To You!  And Max, I know you'll sneak your 2 cents in somewhere every blue moon or so right?  Some cartoon characters never die, their ink just fades. Peace.

Re: Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here

Well I got my issue #2 today but still no number one. At least now I know that they've got the correct adress and that transport works, but it still doesn't explain why I haven't got my Mac|Life #1 even though they told me that they would re-send it.

I'll mail them again but I don't expect much other than a very abreviated answer - long and explaining answers to my questions isn't really theire thing and that I say from experience. hmm

Re: Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here

Got it! I finally got my issue #1 yesterday and almost emidiately I checked out that FileMaker add/review that so many has talked about. I must admit that the first impression was that it was a review but then at closer inspection there are a few things that doesn't match to make it a genuine review - at least not in Mac|Life. There's the "Advertising supplement" at top of the pages, there's the "MacAddict editors choice" badge and the whole piece feels like it was taken right out of MacAddict (colors, type, space etc).

Now about Mac|Life. After have read two issues I must say that though I sort of like it there's a few things I really wonder about. For starters all those wide black borders, whats the thing with them? Did something/someone die during the making of the layout for this magazine?

Whats with all the <<< and >>> ? Sometimes you use them to point something out and sometimes you use them just for decoration. Like in the poll results where you use them as pointers but where it makes it very easy to misunderstand the results with statements such as ">45%". Does this mean "more than 45%" or does it mean 45%?

Sometimes you use the |< to mark the ending of an article/review and sometimes you don't.

Keep up the good work and keep evolving Mac|Life into a better magazine.

I agree. The whole thing looks like one big ransom note. I've picked it up and leafed through it a few times....but I haven't actually *read* any of it. It's an absolute cacophony of text and images.

Re: Received Mac|Life No. 1 - post your comments here

Well, since people mostly tend to be vocal when we want to express disappointment, I'll just add a positive note to this thread. I've read (read, not leafed or skimmed, but dog-eared pages) two issues now, and I really like the mag.

A few people have criticised its vibe, saying they miss the irreverent tone of MacAddict. I read MacAddict for about a year before switching to the Mac, so my perspective is likely a bit different, but that was probably the one thing I really disliked about the mag. It's possible to be irreverent without being rude and immature. I'm certain it's an unpopular opinion, but MacAddict did a lot to turn me *off* the Mac user community, and had it been my only exposure to Mac users, had I considered it representative of the entire community, I wouldn't have wanted to join it.  I know that at least some (most? all?) of the people writing for Mac|Life are the same, but the mag has a different vibe. It seems to me to be more mature, as witty, less in-your-face.  Like most people who have several hundred-to-a-few-grand to invest in a new computer, I'm an adult, and this middle-school clique-y "it's Apple, so it's got to be amazing; it sucks, so it must be Microsoft" mentality really irks me to no end. On the contrary, Leslie's more subtle metaphor of Windows as Voldemort (#1, p.10) made me grin instead of grind my teeth.

Aesthetically, I'm diggin' the new mag and the new site. I'm so over low-contrast design. The white/black/blue palette is high in contrast, big 'n' bold, easy to read, and eye-catching. It stands out on the shelves, even next to/near flashy 3D mags.

So far, so good. Congrats and thanks.

I guess it's like Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark. Change a few key commands and call it an upgrade. Change for the sake of change. Something we all have to live with regardless of how it looks and feels.
