All things internet troubles with MacPro
Hello everyone...
We recently bought 3 new MacPro's and are having som difficulties with anything related to the internet. Dashboard will open, but none of the widgets will work; Safari crashes and Mail crashes, too. Everything was working initially... Grrr!
We loaded SuitcaseFusion and Norton Anti-Virus recently and thought that there might be a conflict. But, we turned off both those features and still no dice. Does anyone know of any conflict/setting we might be missing??
BTW - one of the three sytems is working fine with all the same settings and software. I am stumped.

Re: All things internet troubles with MacPro
You can't just "turn off" Norton products. You should completely uninstall it and keep it that way. If you have some specific need, we can surely recommend something better.
But I doubt that's the cause of your problems. How are you connecting? Wired/wireless? Cable/DSL/Other? How do you have the network setting configured? Simple DHCP? If it's wireless, are you 100% sure you're connecting to your own network? Use Terminal or Network Utility to ping some known good servers (I usually go for apple.com) and see if you can find anything.
If at all possible, I would also try connecting to a completely different network. Find a coffee shop with wifi if you can't hit an open network from home.

We are wired, DSL, DHCP... What do you think?

Is Norton a problem overall? What would you suggest?

Re: All things internet troubles with MacPro
First thing I'd do is get rid of Nortons entirely. And never put it on a machine again. If you are concerned about non-existent viruses try something like ClamXav instead.
And it's not just a matter of turning it off. It puts so much crap ALL OVER your computer, it's unbelievable! You have to get rid of it completely. Seriously, it's bad news. It's not even Universal Binary so using it on an Intel Mac is a double whammy of pain and frustration.
You may have problems removing everything. You might have to do a web search or ask on here for tips and tricks.
Suitcase Fusion also is known to be flakey and troublesome. Why bother to pay for something when Linotype FontExplorerX is free and does a far better job?
I'd say that's where your troubles lie. As for one machine working OK and two not? That's the way of things go when Nortons is in the picture.

I knew I should have checked here before loading all the software... yikes. This will be a fun fix...
We uninstalled Norton... we think. How can we be sure it is all gone?

Ha! Good question. This is for Version 8. Can't find anything for 10. It will be similar.
How to get rid of our crap by the nice people at Symantec
Wait, you're not finished yet.

We are back online... thanks to everyone that helped me out on this problem.
We "truly" uninstalled Norton and everything miraculously started to function properly again. We've used Norton for years... I can't believe the problems it caused! Thanks again!

Re: All things internet troubles with MacPro
well the fine people at Symantec know the only way to really protect a PC is to keep it off the internet.
they assume the same goes for a Mac and program accordingly.

Norton used to be good back in the old System 6 to 9 days, but it truly sucks when run on MacOS X, the general consensus is that you shouldn't run norton on MacOS X

yup. I have more respect for Microsoft then I do for Norton, all their products for both platforms are the worst out there.
