data recovery from iMac
I have an old iMac that won't boot from the hard drive (4GB). You can boot from the system disk (9.2 maybe, or earlier) and you can access the files, but can't reinstall the OS, the HD just clicks. With the boot disk, you can't access USB (so I can't just use a jump drive, or a zip). I'll probably take the HD out and hook it up to one of my PCs via an IDE cable (thought I've not yet looked inside I'm assuming it's just a standard IDE connection). I'm also assuming that I'll be able to see the files on the HD using another OS (it'll be either Windows XP or Linux). I hope the power supply connections are the same as for the PC.
Does this sound reasonable? Any other ideas? I have another iMac of the same vintage, but I don't see any SCSI connnections etc., and the iMac is too old to have a CD burner. I'm assuming using a data recovery service would be relatively big bucks? no? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: data recovery from iMac
Disk Warrior, version 1 probably would work, if the hard drive itself is working.
I do not know if Data Rescue II would work, booting from a CD.

Re: data recovery from iMac
Mac HDs and peecee HDs are exactly the same hardware wise. It's only the formatting that's different. A Mac can read peecee disks but a peecee can't read Mac disks without extra software, and I don't remember what that is.
All iMacs are standard ATA, so you may be able to put it in the other mac. That's a PITA. tho. Best (and simplest) bet is an external USB or Firewire enclosure which can be had cheap cheap.

...oh wait, but the HD just clicks? That could be a physically broken HD, or it could just be corruption. Yeah, I'd give DiskWarrior a shot.

Not ever using Data Rescue II, it should work - it would just see the HD as a volume, which it recovers from. No different than recovering from a memory card, which it does indeed do.

I'm still trying to figure out if you're a girl posing as Macboy4139, or a boy posing as a girl, and a bit confused sexually. <shrug> laughinol

Re: data recovery from iMac
Hi
Use Kernel Macintosh Recovery software as it would show you all the volumes present in a Hard Drive where from it recovers.
go to this page http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/Maci … tware.html for more information.
It will work great and will lead to end your problem.
Thanks

Re: data recovery from iMac
data rescue requires a separate target for recovery.
you won't find an scsi connection on an iMac.
and yes, a regular ATA set of connection and power supply connection are used in the iMac.
your PC won't get into it.
but you did say you had another Mac.
pull the drive, use a USB kit on it and plug it into your other Mac.
you should then be able to recover your files if the drive is working.
Diskwarrior as previously recommended just may be the ticket tho.
providing the drive is working.

where could you find a USB > ATA interface? I'm also looking at
grabbing some data of an old iMac G3 DV
Think Different(ly) or not. You could always start your photocopier. Just like Redmond has been doing for years.

It doesn't require it (at least, it didn't last time I used it), but it is highly recommended.
