Hello, Team...

I just joined Folding@Home, and the MacAddict Team. I have a few questions-

I have the GUI client running, it shows a molecule, rotates a bit every 30 seconds or so, and the left panel says "Working..." but the progress is 0.00% and my stats online show 0%.

Is it working? Or is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!

Re: Hello, Team...

If you post the name of your protein and your Mac and CPU speed, we can estimate the time to completion.   Also, please post your user name because there's a number of new members this week and it helps to differentiate y'all.

More importantly, if you have an Intel Mac, we have a wonderful new Folding program which will rocket past the standard folding programs.

For comparison, on my G4 iMac 1 Ghz, the average protein takes 17 days to finish.   Proteins can vary greatly in size.

Even if you're on a PPC Mac, the CLI  (command line interface) is just as easy to install (thanks to Artemis G3) and even more unobtrusive.

Then, with your info, we can decide which install is optimal.

Welcome to the Team.

Re: Hello, Team...

Ok, I have a PowerBook G4, 1.33 Ghz. After about 20 minutes, it got to .22%. I like the Graphical version over the command line interface version.

I am working on p3041_supervillin.

Re: Hello, Team...

okay that's fine.   Both CLI and GC versions have advantages.

Updated nuances:  some of the proteins such as villin have been studied since the Folding dark ages.    Last time I checked, there were 200,000 PCs, Macs and Linux boxes running Folding.

Intel Macs, Linux boxes and Playstation 3 are especially valuable.   So far, team has only a couple of those.

Fold on.  up

Re: Hello, Team...

A few hours after the time of completion, several statistics routines will be run at the ExtremeOverclocking site.   I check the site regularly.  Here's the team link of users, starting with Page 1  http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ … =&t=18

Re: Hello, Team...

hell I can't even find my name yet.
granted I haven't completed any proteins yet, but i am running both versions, each with their own protein.

Code:

Current Work Unit
-----------------
Name: p2125_lambda_5way_melt_4_10011
Download time: March 23 03:15:31
Due time: July 10 03:15:31
Progress: 71%  [|||||||___]

the graphical is at 92% on p3038_supervillin.

I think I am being cheated here http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/shakefist.gif

Re: Hello, Team...

Sorry, Macnuke.  I overestimated your speed.    It's approximately the same as my brother's G5, but yours is a dual , so it should be twice as fast.

Your p2125 is twice as big as the supervillin.  Basically, the further the DueDate, the bigger the protein.  The supervillin is worth 189 points whereas the p2125 is 392 points.

Be thankful that you haven't got any dropped proteins.  That really hurts when it happens.

would it be faster to use both processors for one protein or tackle two at a time?
when I installed the terminal version, it only ran around 90%. which on a dual, it's a bit less than half speed.
so i launched the graphical and let it run. fans aren't too loud, so i let it run both.
and the two proteins run me around 180% processor big_smile

considering it's not due till July..... do i get extra credit for turning it in early? lol

Re: Hello, Team...

There's always a few % of CPU not used in the Terminal version.   I think its mainly because of disk action.  I think you're fine, nuke.

In activity monitor under CPU, if you look at the 3rd line of bottom left, you will see the NICE row.  This is my terminal Folding.  (Since you have a dual, yours may be different.)

Re: Hello, Team...

When I see this complex protein, slowly spinning, and obviously doing something important, what exactly is it computing?

Re: Hello, Team...

Also, how do I know when it is due?

[edit] Is there a due date? [/edit]

Re: Hello, Team...

Folding @ Home is calculating the shape of the protein primarily. (Hey, I could be wrong).     One thing for sure is, the protein is very sensitive.   The intermediate goal is to find the situations where abnormal proteins occur.

The protein folds in something like a microsecond.

To check the due date, find the file  "unitinfo.txt".    Depending on which installer you use, it could be in different folders.    The CLI installer written by ArtemisG3 creates the folder in Home / Library / fah1

Re: Hello, Team...

Woah! That's not fair! It's due in 2 weeks, and I just joined yesterday. I don't think my PowerBook could make that deadline running 24/7, (which it will be for 9 of thos days when I'm not here).

I'm <1% after running for 12 hours overnight!

Re: Hello, Team...

What apps are you running besides Mail, browser and messenger ?

Are you sure your deadline is in April   ?  (no offense)

The CLI version is about 10 % faster.

What % complete do you have now ?

Re: Hello, Team...

the QuickFold installer screenshots for CLI version  http://www.maclife.com/forums/topic/81684

Download Quickfold there.   Try saying "no" to bigpackets, just in case, if you choose to go CLI.

Re: Hello, Team...

I had it running alone, overnight on my old PB G4 (1.33 Ghz). I just checked, and the deadline is April 10. I like the GUI version though, and really dont think the Terminal one can be that much faster.

It has been running for 15 hours nonstop, with some light internet browsing in the mix, and is .78%

Re: Hello, Team...

McAddict, find your FAHlog-Prev.txt, FAHlog.txt, unitinfo.txt files and copy/paste the text here so we can see what is going on.

Also, when you say it ran overnight, you aren't letting your laptop go to sleep after say 30 minutes, are you?

Re: Hello, Team...

well the p3038 finished last night... and I am at 35% on p3040 supervillin.
the cli is still on the p2125 lambda, and at 92%.
so it looks like running each version on it's own processor is a good way to go.
they both get anywhere from 75%-95% of each processor depending on what I am doing elsewhere.
so 2 1/2 days for a supervillin and 3 1/2 - 4 for a lambda

in case anyone is curious....

Re: Hello, Team...

I have my MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running F@H all through the night and during the day when I am at work.  When I get home it runs in the background.
From what I have just read, I can get more than one protein folding at a time?  I think this is excellent!  Since I have 2 processors, and since the lappy is not under my fingers for roughly 18 hours a day, I would like it to still be productive.
Advice?  Am currently running the Graphical...

Re: Hello, Team...

Mac Compliant,

check out our SMP installer.     The Intel Macs have a chance to run one of the Turbo installers.

Re: Hello, Team...

I restarted my computer, and reopened it, and it was at 6%. Must not have been updating or something. Strange.
