How widespread is WiFi coverage, compared to cell networks? You do realise they'll have to actually sell these things to more people than just yourself, do you?

That's true. One nifty feature of some of the new Dells is that you can get the cellular data cards built-in. Or there's ExpressCard if you have a MBP.
Is BT the only option, or can a USB cable be used instead?

Is that extra pound really gonna make a difference? I know the extra screen real estate does for me...
If you're really that sensitive about weight and size and less about usability, I think the iPhone or a similar device will fit your mobile computing needs better than a laptop..
It's not so much the weight for me as it is the size. My 12" Powerbook is smaller or the same size as a lot of my college books. The same can't be said for the MacBook or the MacBook Pro
2.66Ghz QuadCore-Nehalem w/24"LED CD ---2.2Ghz BlackMB---15" 2.4Ghz MBP(work)

About 2.5 lbs actually. You can get thin and lights that are 3lbs or less - with a 1280x800 display even. Sure, the extra screen real estate does it - for you. Others would gladly use a smaller screen to save space and weight.
Smartphones are limited. Even tinier screens and tinier keyboards. Not to mention the lack of software - especially for the iPhone. I can't give a presentation from an iPhone (you can with some, but not all smartphones). Working on Excel from a PDA sucks.
I guess between this and the consumer tower thread, I'm puzzled as to why whatever Apple currently offers should be adequate for everyone.

Oh, 'bout the Bluetooth. At the time I wrote that (over a year ago? wow) I didn't know how small those BT chips really were. So they're in just because they can be so useful and don't bring any disadvantages.
It'll be interesting to see if this ever happens...
